complications after unblocking

My 9 yrs old male orange tabby was unblocked on saturday. He had stones in his bladder and a large stone lodged in his penis. The catheter was left in for 12hrs then he was sent home . He did not urinate at home just left wet spots everywhere. Brought him back in to the vet and she expressed his bladder and asked me to do the same. I had a hard time doing it as he of course didn't like it even though he was on meds to help relax him. He's now been readmitted to the vet and they reinserted his catheter and plan to leave it in for 48hrs in hopes that this will give time for everything to heal.Has anyone else's cat had this problem when they didn't urinate but were not reblocked? Apparantley if this doesn't work he'd require another surgery as he may have a stricture which is narrowing of the urethra most likely due to the trauma of the stone removal. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks he is on  urinary so. I'm just hoping he'll be able to urinate after the catheter comes out today. I'm really worried about him.

hi again, just wanted to send you this article by a Vet linking diet to crystals and urethral blockages....(not always the whole cause, can happen occasionally to kitties on wet food too...)
just for your information, if boo isn't eating wet food already be sure to make the transition asap when he is home again.....best to you both, hope all is going well tonight.

hi I'm very sorry to hear of booboo's problems, this is very common especially in male cats that are fed a dry food diet.

I will send you a couple sites both with info on aftercare. the first does say "there remains a risk for re-blockage for the first 1-2weeks post surgery" it also states the catheter should be sewn into place and left for a few days...

a mention on the second site says inability to pass urine after the surgery can be due to an urethral spasm....IMO pain can also cause these spasms to occur.

I truly hope booboo is kept in longer this time until a full evaluation is done and he is able to pass urine on his own. best to you both. keep us updated ok...♥
