Hi D,
Opus and Jade have given you great advice. I agree with no anesthesia or x-rays especially by the vet that did the dental cleaning. Since Horners can result from trauma (like dental surgery) it is no wonder your original vet says he does not know the cause, he certainly will not admit that the den tal had anything to do with it.

All he wants is more of your money.

I would call the ER vet and ask if the dental could have been the cause and also if it will correct itself. If the ER vet confirms it's cause then I would call your vet, but not to spend more money on tests. He should know that dentals are traumatic and Horners could very well be from what he did.
He should give you all the pain medicine you need and any other meds that might help, to deal with the condition at present.

right now the last thing you need is to be putting your poor baby back in the hands of this guy.
Anything that needs to be done should be done with the ER vets.
Of course this is only my opinion.

Keep us posted,

Hello.  Please reread Opus' post.  Due to their nature, cats will hide even the worst pain.  It is very difficult for US to tell if they are hurting.  The third eyelid showing is often a SIGN of pain.  Wanting to be in a dark area can be another SIGN of pain.  What Opus is saying, is see if you can get him started on the Buprenex to see if that makes a difference.

I also agree with not putting D under anymore anesthesia right now.  Try the pain meds first.

No, he is not on pain meds. Only on eye drops, Neomycin &Polymyxin. He is eating (hard and soft). He doesn't seem to be in pain.. still wants to play, but also likes to now lay in the darkest part of the room..  I'll check out the site, drugs and FORLS

Thanks so much for the info!

first I will give you a write up about Horners Syndrome from a great pet MD site. for this to be whats causing the dilation and since it occurred following surgery it would appear to me the cause could be trauma, the article says trauma to the neck or spine causes damage to the 1st nerve segment...look at the diagram. this could happen due to undo roughness on the part of the Vet or Tech. I hope not, but possible

http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_horner_s_syndrome.html

however another site that I belong too, I did read before and bookmarked and was able to find again.

-the drug Atropine may have been used during surgery, this is to regulate the heart rate and can cause a longstanding or permanent dilation of the eyes...time would only tell you the outcome

-also was he given a drug for pain? some of these can cause the eyes to dilate and eyes will return to normal following the discontinuation

-finally PAIN can also cause the eyes to dilate and THIRD EYELID TO SHOW....was he given pain meds???
if not I would certainly request that he gets one. the best for nerve pain and one of the safest for cats following dentals is called BUPRENEX.

IMO I wouldn't put him through anesthesia and xrays as I said earlier I really don't know what that would tell you, question more abt the meds and possible horners

good luck to you and kitty, I sure hope this resolves itself on its own and real soon, please let us know...keep us updated♥

I would ask asap for this pain med and see if it makes any difference. He could have a condition called FORLs...this is a very painful condition of the teeth and gums and perhaps by getting a dental done the nerves of the teeth were disturbed and now causing pain

My vet didn't know what caused it, it was the ER vet that said it was Horners.
Background: had cleaning Thurs. Fri i called vet because both eyes were still very dilated, he said wait another day. Very early Sat morning D woke me up with left eye still fully dilated and right eye partially closed, 3rd eyelid covering 1/2 of his eye and watering. I immediately took D to ER
Now my vet wants to do full set of x ray's under full anesthesia, which D does not handle well. If i knew the time frame for Horners recovery, it would assist with future plans.

Hi D,

Your veterinarian will give you a better answer to this that any one on this forum.

Since this was cause by some trauma in the Dental Cleaning process he will be familiar with how and when this can be resolved. Sometimes all it takes is time.
