inappropriate urination and bowels

Our 16 yr old cat is just not using the litter box any more. It is not that he can't get in it. As well as his old one, I set up a shallow rubbermaid container as a litter box. I put him outside for a few minutes, sometimes he urinates, sometimes he waits and does it on the tile floor against a cupboard or dishwasher, or sometimes in the middle of the wood floor.  He is not even sneaky about it, just goes ahead in front of me sometimes.  Had him to the vet several times and told nothing wrong, just getting older, behavioral. I few weeks back I thought it was near the end for him as he was kind of staggering and not eating, then he bounced back a day later. His cry is weak now. Just don't know at what point do I know his quality of life is not what it should be. I haven't had to make this decision before. He is not in any apparent pain.

I was thinking crystals, too.  If it is painful for him to urinate, he'll associate the litter box with the pain.

your cat is a male and a senior and at great risk for having crystals...ie stones in his bladder, this is EXTREMELY painful and they will urinate outside of the litter box and often right in front of you trying desperately to tell you they are in PAIN. please take this poor kitty to see a Vet asap, they will do a urine sample and tell you this is whats wrong...I am very sure!!!
and PLEASE please feed him canned food, no matter that he has been eating dry all his life he now desperate needs canned food b/c of the high moisture content....even if he is drinking lots that will NEVER compensate for eating dehydrated food. honestly this is the only thing that saved my cat.
these crystal will block off the urethra making it impossible to urinate and the bladder will burst.
I am not trying to scare you, this is what will happen!!!!

PS Just reading some other posts here and didn't know about using wet vs dry food.  Riley has always been on dry food, last couple of yrs on low protein.
