my new kitten has a problem

I just adopted.a kitten I'm unsure of his age.I'm.guessing around 2 months he was formally a feral. he eats really well, drinks lots of water and is always playful. but sense the first day got him, about a week maybe two, he has had diarreah. I thought maybe it was due to change of diet but now I noticed that his anus is very red a little swollen and appears to be leaking a almost clear but somewhat greyish mucus like substance. I don't know what do I can't afford a vet anybody have any ideas of what it could be? And ho .to help him?

good for you for taking this lovely darling little fella in to a loving caring home. since you say he was a feral...I'm guessing he may well have worms...because goodness knows what momma's diet was and passed onto her kittens. is it possible for you to take a sample of the poop/greyish matter to a clinic for testing? this is a relatively inexpensive test that a clinic can do locally...than they can give you the proper medication/dewormer to treat. please don't use over the counter meds b/c you could well treat the wrong type and be putting unnecessary harsh chemicals into his system that won't help whatever he may have...the red swollen little anus would be caused from all the diarrhea. if let untreated this kitten will not thrive and become very ill...
What are you feeding him for food?

I recommend doing the stool test, de worming him if necessary and switching him to a canned food. Preferably a grain free canned food.. I have switched my cats to solistic and spots stew and other flavors... they're both grain free and low carbohydrate.  A wet, low carb, grain free diet is what cats need, if you can switch him to a raw meat diet when he recovers that would be great... once they get used to things like wiskas as a kitten and dry food, you may never be able to get them to eat a healthier diet. Even cooked chicken ground up and human baby food without oninons would be much better for him now I believe. I would try gently washing his bum with warm water and then applying organic coconut oil to sooth it a little bit. I think a probiotic supplement is better than yogurt when you can afford it since you won't have the lactose issues if he is reacting to that. Good luck...

yeah its definitely pricey but i was going to try and find a store locally but sadly i have to ship it. but thank you so much for your help i really appreciate it. also i noticed last night that his poop was caked over him anus and of course i had to remove it. he is also no longer having diarrhea but its still very very soft. and gets stuck in his fur. i've tried clipping some of the fur there but it doesnt help. and his bum is still very red.

ok.....now I see, it appears RAD is a very balanced and good diet. but expensive....$6.49 for 6oz...an adult cat would eat at least one of these per day, can you afford that?
and can you buy locally or would you have to ship it in?
If you do want to try it, good for you. just remember to transition from one food to the other very slowly so kitty doesn't get a GI upset such as diarrhea. also I would advise you to only buy one at a time....just in case kitty refuses to eat it...many love raw food but there are also many who don't (mine included)....

yes there are many good homemade diets.....in fact I make one for my one boy Nemo...while Sami won't touch it.
however kittencup, if you are on a budget it will be hard to get started, b/c to start off with I had to order many supplements that MUST go into the recipe so they don't get a deficiency  in something...Vit E, D, calcium, Taurine, etc. so these set you back at first..but than a bottle lasts a long time. but each has to be measured precisely. I make cook the meat, add all the supplements and vitamins than freeze it in pint sealers and just take one out at a time in the fridge. a pint will last abt 3 days. great care has to be taken to get the recipe exact...or will lead to health problems quickly....it can't be just meat alone.

yeah its definitely expensive that's for sure.  my room mate works at petco so she always buys kitty food when i need i just have to pay her back. and like i said Im broke. which makes me wonder are there any at home kitty food recipes? or do you think that would be more expensive if there are any? so you recommend wellness?

good for you doing lots of research and asking questions.....ALL kitties will prefer dry food its like us getting junk food in place of good food, its loaded with so many chemicals to make it taste good, so of course they'll prefer it....but canned food is so much better for them. read the following site and all the health concerns with dry food.

http://www.catinfo.org/

I don't really recommend Royal Canin...its a very expensive brand and not really the greatest of choices when it comes to canned. there are other ones out there that are better foods and lower in cost. Wellness is one, but you have to buy it at a pet food store, they don't sell this in grocery stores..

yeah i couldn't remember how to spell Diatomaceous earlier and that is the same site had read about it from lol. and my kitten is very small i only give about half a teaspoon of plain yogurt maybe less once a day. i had read and been told that the bacteria in yogurt gets rid of bad Bactria that may be harbored in his tummy which could cause the diarrhea. I had him originally on Royal canin wet food for kittens but i thought perhaps that's why he was having diarrhea so i did gradually switch him to dry, and he seemed to prefer the dry to the wet.I'm not even sure what breed he is sadly. i wipe down his butt every time its dirty and i haven't seen any cysts or husks in his poop so i'm not sure what it is but Im just very worried about my little fluff ball.

the majority of cats are lactose intolerant......however most are able to digest a small amount of non sugared yogurt as a digestive enzyme, good point tho it wouldn't hurt to cut this out to see if it helps ease the diarrhea.
canned food will NOT cause diarrhea, unless you attempted to change over too quickly, in that case anything will upset their tummy's...need to do all food changes gradually. thx for your input ♥

well from my experience when cats get of a certain age you can no longer give them any type of dairy products i have a simes cat and every time i feed him milk or anything with dairy he gets diareah and also canned food has the same affect and he liked to eat my plants wich also makes him sick. it may be the yogurt or the food try to swich it up and see how it goes it could be worms you can inspect the poop and see if anything is in it or anything like that but his bum could be infected from the diarreah and raw...

oh I should have added....be sure you or kitty doesn't inhale this ...its such a fine powder and dangerous if inhaled..so don't sprinkle anywhere(for fleas) unless you use a mask....good luck, let us know okay

fossil shell flour is DIATOMACEOUS EARTH....and yes you can use this for worms...for kitties just be VERY sure you buy the FOOD GRADE and not the pool grade. use 1/4 teaspoon a day for at least 3-4 weeks...add to the wet food. I hope you will buy kitty some wet/canned food. I really am against dry food of any kind and whiskas is one of the very worst on the market...so many additives and preservatives among other nasty stuff....

heres a site on the DE...

I have been feeding him whiskas kitten chow and a little bit of plain yogurt. I was thinking about trying fossil shell flour, ive read that it treats minor cases of worms and other parasites and see if that helps any but.I'm not sure. I'm completely broke still next week and I really don't want to have to wait that long to.find out if he is in.serious need of a vet or not.
