nail trims

Hi everybody.  I know it has been awhile I hope all of you (and your furry loved ones) are doing well.

I don't usually trim my kitty's nails because she is a real climber and after one trip to the emergency vet with a concussion after a fall I decided to let her have all the traction that nature provides.  Is there a reason (other than my hardwood floors....)  that I should resume trimming? or is it safe and healthy to let them grow at will?  Occasionally I see her biting at them herself, so I wonder if they bother her.

I know I feel bad about keeping her in to, but I really don't live in an appropriate area for her to be free roaming.  That is why I am so careful to take her out everyday  (unless it is bad weather and she doesn't want to go or I am very ill)  for a minimum 20 minutes, but usually more.  I also play with her often.   Luckily I work from home a lot, so she isn't stuck inside all alone.

That truly is an amazing cat you have!  I would neveR be able to keep a cat locked indoors no matter how much it cost me to buy, fix, take care of, whatever.  I just can't do it!  I wouldn't want anyone to do that to me.

Anyways, my neighbor has 2 indoor cats and the poor things just stare out the sliding-glass door everyday.  She puts them out in "cat-cages" for a while.  They're beautiful cats.  My cats go by, everyday, and ask her cats why they can't come out to play, hunt, sun-bathe, etc.  :)))

I had my wht cat, Whitey, bring a bird into our living room, one day.  I like to leave the side-dr, or garage doors open, sometimes, to get a fresh-breeze to clear out the stuffiness in the house/garage.  So, Whitey brings me another bird trophy.  It's alive and kicking and fluttering.  As soon as I try to pick Whitey up, w/bird-in-mouth, she lets the bird go and the bird begins to fly around the house.  The bird keeps bumping into the skylight wanting to get out.  I open the front door and instruct the bird, verbally, in English to go out the front-dr., please, birdie?  And, the bird lOOks @me and dives for the frnt-dr. and leaves.

I don't know who's stranger, me or the bird.  (?)  Whitey was just doing her job & showering me w/more treasures to thank me for being her mom.  O:-)

Yeah!  I agree!  Trim nails.  DON''T DE-CLAW!!!!!  OUCH!!!!  B careful, though.  ;)

People are always surprised when I tell them my cat got a concussion from a fall, but they haven't seen what a total MANIAC she is.

this is my segue to my cute story about how crazy she is......

Early in the AM this last holiday weekend I am awakened by a horrible squawking.  I keep my windows tied with strings so that she can't push them open and get out, so  they only open about 2inches.  She had somehow wedged her upper body out the window and had not just one  but TWO birds in her grasp.  I know this is hard to believe, but  I promise you  I am not lying.  As I pulled her in one got away,  but the other was much harder.  She was pushing away from me with her back legs and squirming and holding the bird with her mouth and front paws.  Feathers were flying, it was insane...   The bird seemed to fly away ok once I got it away from her, but.... I have some doubts that it was undamaged.  Sativa spent the rest of the day pacing and crying, looking for her bird. And I was pretty scratched up too.

I just had to brag.  I feel bad about the bird, but I am so proud of her.  Locked inside and still an amazing hunter!

ps.  Trimmed her nails :)

LOL Skunkie.  I grew up w/a Skunky.

Anyways, I had a sm kitten, 1 mo old, and I trimmed his nails once.  They were veRy sharp and he was a rough kitten.  He scratched me daily and bit me too.  The scratches have all healed since I gave him away on June 18th.  I only clipped the tips, though.  Those were the ones giving me problems/scratches.  He was overly playful and rough.

I have 2 other cats.  I don't trim their nails at all.  They come and go freely as they please when they please.  I have a water-bed that they don't mess w/either.  I have carpets and they don't pose a problem there, either.  They do have trees, outside, and a carpet-lined kitty-condo to scratch on too.  Some cats just need it and other cats don't.  I will say, however, that they shouldn't be trimmed on an outdoor cat no matter what!  They need their claws for self-defense.

Glad ya haven't forgotten me!!!!!!!!!!  =D

LOL-Ya got a clumsy fur child!!!!!!!!!!!!  I'd have to say that not all kitties are graceful.  My Skunkie is graceful, but good Lord have I had some real klutzes!  LOL

You'll have a win-win situation by trimming her nails just a little bit!  Skunkie's nails gets trimmed like once every 2 months or so.  =)

Take care, hon!!!!

ZQ    I course I haven't forgotten you :)  Just get bogged down in my career, etc.

She is fine now,  but still just as reckless as ever, and don't tell her I said this....but a little clumsy.

She has a scratching mat and a cardboard scratcher, but doesn't seem that interested,  and the stand up scratchers are a little out of my budget.
Sounds like the thing to do is trim just a little, I definitely don't want them to be uncomfortable for her.  And I know my landlord would appreciate it!

Thank you =)

Hi!   The answer to your question is really going to depend on the access your kitty has to scratching posts and items to help maintain her claws.   If she is an active scratcher, she may keep the claws down in size for a little while, but eventually, the claws will continue to grow, curl around and potentially pierce the pads of her feet.

It would be best to trim them as you can (or have your veterinarian do it for you) so that you don't run into this issue!

Hi!!  It's been a long time!!  Glad you haven't forgotten us!  =)

Gosh, I hope your cat is okay now!  Did she fall from a tree?  Poor kitty!  Anyway, I think that if you don't cut her nails they'll just grow super long and sharp as he!!  I honestly think that you'd be alright trimming her nails a little bit.  I have hardwood floors, too and I love them!!!  When my cats nails grow, I can hear the nails clicking on the floor when they walk.  Ya just know it's doing some damage to the floors.  If you trim the nails a little, she'll still be able to climb trees and defend herself and you'd protect your beautiful floors.

Hopefully other people will come and give their opinions too.  I'm curious to see what other people think!

Good to see ya again!!  =D
