painful shots

I feel so upset I took my kitty to get her yearly shots and she is in so much discomfort she wont let me stroke her, she had 3 shots,, the Feline 2....and the 2nd Rabies  how long do they reamain in discomfort, I rang the vet and they said it varies with differant cats but If I had known she would be so sore I woulnt have had the 3 done all at the same time ,.so I guess I am asking how long does this last and does the same thing happen to your kitties ?

She is almost back to normal  but I still feel guilty , well I have a year to figure out what to do next time  apart from a new vet and supervision , maybe not all the shots at one time either, thank you cat lovers you have given me some  kind support when I needed it ...

I like Tweety. Don't see anything wrong with the name :)
Abby's name was Chema. I didn't like it so I changed it. Because he was still a little 3 month old kitten, it was easy for him to realize he was Abby. And Abby is a BOY lol...

Margy, about cat names.  Tweety is a calico, yes?  One of my childhood cats was a calico.  My dad was creative and named her Rainbow.

That's a good idea to go and "observe" next time.  I can't tell you how many times I wished I would have been with Jade during a "procedure."  Especially the time all they took her back for was shots, but somehow knocked the scab off her ear (pre amputation) and couldn't stop the bleeding!  Now how could her ear be involved if they are just giving her shots?  I was really distressed and had this terrible feeling she wasn't being treated right.  And you're right, they wisk kitty away before you can even think.

Sorry Tweety still isn't feeling 100%.  It's definitely a very good sign she's eating well, though.  You're a Great pet parent!! :)

well I like the name Jade it sure beats Tweety maybe I will rename her .I went to see that vet today and asked him what he thought could have happened to make her 'shoulder area' so sore , I asked could they review how the shots were given , they kind of stared and thought Humm another dumb English woman ..anyway , next time I will go in to watch it done , I didnt this time they just took her her in box and had her back in about 2 mins ....shes still not right and more lethargic than she used to be ..but definatly on the mend .,and eating well.

Hahahaha...that's a pretty funny story :)

Jade came to us as "Jade" so I can't take any credit for her name, but it certainly fits; her eyes are beautiful.

I originally thought your question was "how did you come up with your cats name?"  Ah, well, it's late...*yawn*

Well you know how that goes dear. Some cats will be fine with rabies shots yet they stop eating all of a sudden and scare the heck out of their owners, or suffer from IBD constantly. I mean…..there HAD to be something that he could handle lol……

Dillan is just a very low maintenance cat. He is great to own!

Hey Margy, glad to hear Tweety is feeling better albeit, still sore.  Now that I've thought more about it, I think I remember it being several days before Jade was fully back to herself, but I don't remember her acting like she was sore so maybe the tech who gave Tweety her shots either wasn't so careful or you're right about the blunt needle.  You know, even some techs who take blood from US either do it smoothly or leave a terrible bruise.  I would imagine it's the same in the animal world.  Techs who are good at giving shots and some who aren't.   I've recently received a notice for Jade to have another rabies shot, but she just had one last year so I don't understand why so soon and I'm not looking forward to it At All and will question this.  And after this thread, I will never let her have more than one shot at a time.

PK...I'm happy to hear you really lucked out that Abby and Dillan don't react to that rabies shot.

She still flinches when I stroke her I wonder if they used a blunt needle .......but her appetite is back, she had a rabies last year when she found me, I asked the vet about that he told me they have one each year fro 3 years to build it up...I am still not certain what he meant she was very unwell for 2 days..not even drinking ,they said bring her back I said 'No way Hose ' anyway shes okay now its me that is freaked by the whole thing ..hey I know they have to have shots but got to be a less painful way , this kitty was in so much pain after they did it, ..humm blunt needles..

YAYYYYY......sooooo glad your baby is back to herself again!  =)  I KNOW how relieved you must be!  BTW, I think that spacing her shots out is a great idea.  Getting them too many vaccines at once causes immune system overload, and can make them feel bad.  You'll see a big difference once you start giving her one vaccine at a time-she'll recover much more quickly!

Glad to hear Tweety is feeling like herself again.  See?  About a full 24hrs :)  At least you'll know what to expect next time, but do be prepared that even if you just have one shot at a time, she still may still feel poorly with the rabies shot alone.

Good luck with the house hunting, Margy! :)

Tweety is back to normal...still giving me dirty looks though,I called the vet and asked what had happened as her back was so sore , she wouldnt let me touch her ..apart from feeling bad from the shots, 3 together sounds excessive and I wont be doing that again they can do it one at a time ...Anyway we are all doing well, all I need now is a great house to pop up in the listings and all my problems for the moment are over LOL I am still getting used to cats, i didnt realise how smart they are I would swaer this one knows what I am saying, and being me I chat to her all the time .......

HI Margy,

Sorry you are going through this. Poor kitty. A cat in distress...It is really, a terrible scene, especially YOUR cat. You see, none of my two cats are sensible to rabies shots. They get it every year, along with other shots (distemper etc), and nothing ever happens. But your cat isn't the only one who has seen the side effects. It is common for them to even vomit and stop moving for a few hours, or days. Just keep an eye on her. Give her lots of kisses if/when she feels comfortable with that, and you will see this will all be forgotten in a few days.

well shes still not right but she has had a wander outside and I saw her drinking water as I was worried about dehydration ,I called the Vet and had a moan that made me feel better , they did let me moan , I asked why they didnt tell me it would be so painful, she wont let me touch her back, worst thing is she keeps looking at me sadly ....like I did the shots myself ...So I am okay and I am sure she will be ,I have to regain her confidence .It has to be an heredity thing wouldnt you say ,the sensitive behavior to animals all animals my mom and her Mom wre the same , that Whale story drove me daft yesterday, imagine a creature that big being kept in a tank, ...you know a few years ago now I went with a Flotilla off Catalina Island on my sailing boat to Blockade the boats from San Diego, they were caprturing Dolphins from the Wild to take to Sea World , we were trying to stop them, Gree peace was also there ..

I agree.....the rabies shot makes them feel pretty icky!  They've gotten lethargic and lost their appetites from it!  It is very upsetting to see.  Please.....know you're not alone, and that they're back to themselves in 24 hrs or so!

Hugs

I'm glad you posted on the Cat forum, Margy! There's a lot of wonderful people on here who are so knowledgeable and helpful. :)
I agree with everyone else. That rabies shot is nasty. Sakura had a bad reaction to it last time. Luckily she won't have to have it again for awhile because it's good for a few years but she may need an allergy shot before she gets her next one.

I hope your kitty feels better real soon! Take care. :)

I know, Margy, me too.  It's very upsetting to watch and I don't know why our vets don't warn us what to expect.  Your cat Should begin to show signs of feeling better by this afternoon (or whenever a full day has gone by since the shot) and start to show at least some interest in her food.  If not, definitely call your vet again.  I have a feeling I don't need to tell you that, though :)

Do update and let us know how kitty is feeling, okay?

...and Margy, you didn't do anything wrong by having all 3 shots done at the same time.  It's common for the vet to give all these shots at once.

I know you've never had a cat before and this is all new to you and you're doing a great job taking care of that beautiful girl of yours :)
