I have an old cat (19yrs)who has had bad constipation for which the vet has treated her with Cisapride and Onsior which has worked very well and she has been pooping ok. However, yesterday, she was walking along with black, liquid poo coming out of her rear, seemingly unaware, she then stopped, turned round and was trying to eat it! This now seems to have cleared up, but she seems so fragile, I am keeping her warm and carrying on with the Onsior and 2ml of Lactulose daily. The main problem now is that she has a sore which begins under her tail, and spreads around the anus (not inside), about as big an elongated 10p - when I try to clean her poo matted fur, around there, she understandably yelps. I would like to try something gentler to clean her - would baby wipes be ok? I am loath to take her back to the vets as she is always sick and sometimes poos even when shes well and i don't really want to distress her any more than I need, as I realise this could be near the end for her?
oh your poor kitty, sounds like she is having alot of discomfort. first of all if her poop is that liquidity I would cut back on the Lactulose..maybe to 1ml daily.
I really can't advise you about the sore, this has to be seen by a Vet to be diagnosed properly...it sounds to me like it could be an ulcer or fissure from her bowels...either could be very painful.
I know it stresses a kitty out to have to be examined by a Vet but this is for her own best interests, she cannot be just left in this condition..it will not improve on its own.
with good care she may well have more time left with you.....to be that grand old age, it obvious she has always had real good care, so I hope you will take her in asap and hopefully this is something that can be successfully treated and she is soon well again. Please keep us updated♥
I did decide to take your advice and had made an appt for the next day, but sadly events overtook us. I was giving Sophie her usual lactulose and painkiller, then moved on to her botom to give her a clean up - and what a shock!!!! - awful, just awful - the 'sore' had kind of split and there was a huge hole - couln't even see the end of it, it was so deep, just under the tail, but not the anus itself. Obviously called vet for home emergency visit straight away and she said she'd never seen anything like it before, must be a tumour that had been misse in examination because it was so high up - strange but a good thing, she seemed in no pain with it - washing and even jumping into the windowsill in the morning - and vet said sometimes the nerves die around tumour, so thats something. Anyway she was put to sleep immediatly after a sedative, as to operate would have been way too much for her and you couodnt be sure it was all gone anyway and also, when pooing, she may have broken the stitches... it was very peaceful, but horrible...thanks for trying to help...I forgot to say this was my mothers cat and shes 90, so wer'e crying together... xxx
Oh I'm so very sorry to read this about dear little Sophie...........you did all you could do and did the right thing at the end for her, cats especially don't always show us they are in pain, and if not painful it must have been terribly uncomfortable for her.............she lived a long and otherwise healthy life with two people who loved her very much. Its very hard to say goodbye, but you did the right thing...at her age it would have been just too much to undergo extensive surgery....(((>^.^<)))
I looked at her photo and she was just gorgeous, you will both miss her...but cherish those memories for she lives on in your heart forever♥

I'm sorry but I have to point out that the cat in my profile pic is not Sophie - this is Mandu - my cat, Sophie was my Mum's, she is 12 and very much alive and well and looking out of the window at the snow at the moment - not impressed! xx
