Hi, Julie.  Is there any possibility that your cat is stressed about something?  Anything new in the house-new animal, new person, a move, or any sort of change?  Pulling hair out could be an OCD issue(emotional issue) or it really could be some sort of allergy.

IF it is stress, there are meds that the vet can prescribe for your baby that will help. There is a drug that the vet had one of our cats on called amitryptiline(sp?)

Please, keep us posted.

Have you tried switching to a GRAIN FREE canned food? Sounds very much like a grain allergy to me.....give it a try, much cheaper than Vet bills, good luck:))

I second the suggestions to speak with your vet.  We can give suggestions here, but none of us (insofar as I know) are veterinary professionals.

You should really only wash animals with shampoos unless they get like grease or oil on them.. I would take him to the vet because its possible he could have allergies and potentially need meds or special food.
