sewer gas / cat poop

just wondering if the sewer gas we are smelling is causing our cat to use the bathtub to poop in. The sewer gas is coming from the bathroom .

It's not impossible.  The smell could be confusing your cat and causing him/her to look for an alternate potty site.  Any kind of environmental change can cause this.  And bathtubs are a very, very common alternate site for cats - I think they see bathtubs as big litter boxes!!  And, in fairness, there are much worse places that kitty could use, like under the bed or on your favorite shoes!

If this is a temporary situation (an for all your sakes I hope it is!) then I guess wait and see.  Chances are that when the smell clears up, it will be pretty easy to re-train your cat and she will probably just ease back into her normal routine.

On the lower right of this screen, under health pages, you will see "Cat Litter Box Issues - Environmental".  I advise clicking on it and giving it a read, there is some good advice in there that might pertain to your situation.
