Territorial marking, or a urinary tract infection, can cause this kind of thing.

If it's peeing (done by squatting) but in inappropriate places, possible UTI.

If it is spraying (done by standing up and backing into the thing) on obvious things such as the corner by the doorpost, guests' suitcases, or your back, it's more likely territorial marking.  Think of rival gangs marking things with graffiti to show their territory.  Good thing you got him neutered, but it might still keep happening, especially if you have other cats.

I think you answered your own question.  Some unneutered males will spray, especially if there is a female in heat in the house or neighborhood that they can't get to.  Do your or any of your friends that were there when it happened have an unspayed female cat?

If you have two males, it is still possible for them to get territorial because of each other, despite the neutering.  I'm glad they are neutered and things might settle down, but it is possible they won't stop spraying once they have developed the habit.

annie is right, depending on how old he now is...once spraying has started it can sometimes be very hard to correct...I have 2 male cats myself and the one I didn't get until he was about 6 months old,so he was late getting neurtered... he is a sprayer......not all over and not all the time, he mainly likes to spray the guest room when I have company staying over(nice guy)
Be sure to thoroughly clean everywhere and everything he has marked...with an enzyme cleaner meant to remove the urine scent, remember their noses are much more sensitive than ours so its important to get one from a pet supply store. names such as 'anit-ickky pooh' or petzyme or 'urine off' are good ones. just using bleach or laundering is NOT removing that scent.
good luck.
