street adopted kitty has bad stomach

I adopted a street kitty and she appears to be 6 or 7 months old. she seemed very happy but now her intestines are in a mess. this is probably caused from eating kibble instead of garbage. I know that kibble is like high powered energy bars for cats who were use to eating garbage. Cats have very sensitive guts and at first her feces were hard as a rock and she could hardly poo so I gave her like 1 ml of olive oil to soften things up and it worked however now she has diarrhea. she also has a small fever. Have I hurt her instead of helping her?any help out there? thanks!

vasopressin is produced in the pituitary gland and this regulates the amount of urine the kidneys  produce. DDAVP is the synthetic drug meant to regulate this production.

I understand your dilemma and Applebr is also from Brazil and has mentioned how cats aren't well loved in that country....pity.
I'm just confused....with what I've had to do with the drug DDAVP it is meant to halt an over productive pituitary from making too much urine....than you want to give a tea to produce more urine.???
But it does sound as if you have done your research and seem to know what to do....good luck and keep us informed please....♥

you must remember I am in brasil and I dont understand why the doc would perscribe something that is not good a UTI for her and most countries do not ship anything to brasil because they steal everything! Secondly I do not use charge cards as they can clone them and then you have to pay for it! if you can believe that! It is really the wild west here. I need to know what slippery em bark is in portugues and the probably do not have it because it is a temporate plant. this tea i am using is because she was tryin to pee and I guess it was burning so I wanted her to pee more. she drinks lots of water so there is no dehydration going on and I am giving her very little amounts of the tea as I want her to pee more. i have used this tea many times on cats with uro-instestinal problems and it really seems to help. it is not just a tea for human beings. i know which probiotic I have to buy for her and I can get it here thankfully! it is hard to find things for cats (at least in this part of the country)as they are pretty much a non entity here. unfortutnately.thanks for  all your help and advice!

thanks for your message. i am giving her the quebra pedra because it makes her pee more which is what I want. i dont know if you have ever had a UTI but you feel like you have to go all the time and it hurts! she was peeng in tiny little streams and constantly licking her urethra instead of squatting. by having to pee alot it helps get rid of he infectoin and keeps her cleaned out she is drinking tons of water so no problem for dehydration. I am keeping a close eye on her.I have used this tea many times before in my work with animals here and it helps them a lot. it is not just for kidneys. it is good for the kidneys as well. for te probiotic you haveto realizse that in this part of brazil cats aereally a non-entity.adorable baby kitties are hard to give away. no one wants the cost of an animal as most peole ont eve insurance for themselves.hahaha! i have discoverd two probiotics here that are just for cats. so I will buy one of these.  i dont order anything my mail a most places will not ship to brasil because the steal everthing from the mail and also because it s a part of a plant it is against the law. they are very careful with their own ecosystem here. slippery bark would not be available here as it is a temporate plant. it is from the Appalachian Mountains. funny it says it is for bronchitis, mumps, abcesses, spider bites. says nothing about renal help. it does say it is good as a nutricional helper.and a digestive calmer. I also have no charge cards as this is a huge country and a land of theives. the can clone your card and make a new one and use it and then you have to pay the charges. this is Brazil. It is the wild west recreated. pity
anyway will keep you informed abaout her health. she is now without fever and jumping around again so I am happy about that.
thanks again!!!!

Ok hon, I looked up info on your TEA and I DO NOT RECOMMEND using this for kitty......this is a human product used for kidney stones and your kitty doesn't have kidney stones!!!! its also a DIURETIC and thats the last thing your kitty needs b/c he is already passing TOO MUCH URINE...dilute urine.
IMO this product would cause alot of HARM.

If you want to use a herbal product that is soothing to the bladder, something thats very safe and I use it for my kitties. is SLIPPERY ELM BARK...
make it up in a mixture of 1/2 teas to 2 tablespoons boiling water, let sit for 30 min. than shake to mix.....you can buy this in the bulk food section of health food stores. or buy in powder form from NOW FOODS.

absolutely NO onions hon...
the .2 mg is well below the dangerous level..of baytril so thats good.

find a source of probiotics with a min. of 2 billion CFU(colonly forming units) per day for cats that have been on antibiotics and are ill..
find one with several strains of bacteria, both Lactobcaillus and Bifidobacterium
AND one with as few other ingredients as possible such as no soy or dairy...some cats can tolerate but many cannot.
A few good names for use in CAts are.
Mega Foods -megaflora. 14 strains, 20 billion CFU per capsule
www.iherb.com/mega-foods-meagflo.../408?at=0
this formula is so high that only 1/10 of a capsule per day is all it would take.
or
Sedona Labs-iflora multi probiotic powder, also has 14 strains CFU

I don't know if you have access to these or not, I do know that iherb ships internationally. and since this probiotic is in a capsule in dry form you would not have to worry about spoilage.
(I am in Canada and I order from them)

I will do some research on the tea you mentioned, I have not heard of it. remember many human products are safe for cats but many are not.....

thanks for the congrats...yeah its darn hard not smoking I did for over 40 yrs.....ttyl♥

Please don't feed your cat onions.  Onions are toxic to cats.

pale pink urine. she gets 0.2 mg every 24 hours. have used  it many times from vet for other cats with no problems. flotril is the same as baytril just from shering-plough instead of bayer.
still looking for a good probiotic but as it is sunday no chance to buy any today. feeding her small amounts of home made food to keep thé protein down (rice with carrots, onions, chicken broth etc) to help her intestinal flora.
also today will start her on a tea called "quebra pedra" (break rocks) that is very good for kidney function. and the blindness is usually caused after 4 weeks of treatment at at leat 20mg per kilo but this treatment will be only 3-5 days and if not better back to doc. here in brasl there are lots of nice herbs to use. I know americans dont belive in this but they actually work for both human beings and animals.

hi and welcome to our forum, we always are grateful for new members with loads of experience and wisdom to pass info on to help us all. Here we too are passionate about cats!!
Hon, can I ask you why Flotril was started? where does she have an indication of an infection?????
Can I ask on how high a dose is she on?
I'm asking this b/c Baytril at over 5mg per kg. can cause blindness in cats......its NOT a highly recommended drug to use unless necessary when theres a sensitivity for UTI's.

Please be sure her dosage is no higher than that, speak with your Vet.
I hope you did manage to get some probiotics and digestive enzymes that will help her tummy.

hiya! I have worked (volunteerd) for the past year with a woman in another city helping her with her cattery. she takes in abandoned, unwanted, abused, dogs and cats so I have a lot of information bottled up about caring for cats. she had 3 different vets who help her out by giving her very good discounts on spaying/nutering and giving her meds so I learned a lot of what you can do for cats just by helping her out. :-). i forgot to ask at the vet place yesterday about the probiotic but i am sure they have it it is a huge place (of course most things for dogs and horses as cats are a real non-entity here). you can mostly find good things for your cat if you live in Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, however,in the north east of Brasil cats are not very welcome. I have moved now to a city of about 2.5 million people so I am hoping things will be better here. anyway sorry for going on but i am so passionate about cats. i had to leave my cat where I was living but Rosa, the woman I volunteeed for is keeping her safe and she is very happy there. hopefully soon I will return to get her. her name is Maggie and she is a lovely tortoiseshell. I call her every other day and speak at her in the phone. she likes it! :-) btw I am feeding Griecy Whiskas Junior baby (kitten) cat food. just little bits as she only eats little anyway. :-) Thanks for all your words and interest.

Hi again.  Great job getting Greicy (perfect name for your lovely grey kitty) dewormed and started on meds.  You might try feeding her tiny meals up to six times a day and All wet food if possible.    We have another member from Brazil on this forum and she has one heck of a time dealing with the constant worm infestation of her girls so I hear you there.

Good luck finding the probiotic and yes, do keep in touch! : )

yes I de-wormed her the first thing. I live in brazil and vermin are very bad here and there are a lot of them. today she was started on Flotril by a vet here which is Shering-Ploughs version of Baytril. (enrofloxacin) she is responding well and her fever is now gone. so 5 days of this should bring her on around. :-) thanks everone. will keep in touch about my lovely little Greicy...

Have you dewormed her?  The diarrhea could also be caused by intestinal parasite.  What is her temperature?

hi I havent been to the vet as I have just moved to this big city and have no idea where one is just yet. today I bought her a whiskas food sachet for kitties to start this kind of diet (soft food). tonight I gave her very little food. just to take the edge off her hunger. I want tomorrow to see if i can find her a probiotico as this helps tummy troubles.thanks for your advise will keep posting about her til she´s better. I have worked for over a year as a volunteer for a woman who takes in abandoned and abused animals (cats and dogs) so i have a little knowledge. :-) thanks again

Hi Nance and welcome to the cat forum.  I hope we'll be able to help you.  Your little girl sure is a cutie pie.  I am very worried about her fever.  Has she been to the vet since you took her in?  If not, that would be a priority.  I would also encourage you to get some canned food instead of the kibble.  Kibble doesn't have the moisture kitty needs and canned food is a much healthier choice in keeping both bowel and urinary tract, healthy.  And many small meals a day instead of a large breakfast and dinner in case you're not doing that already.
