CELIAC (SPRUE) DISEASE COMMUNITY
Have you had this?

Have you had this?

Hi all, I have a long history and will make it brief. 35 yr old female, work out, eat pretty healthy.

4 yrs ago was dxd with "gerd" (lots of acid issues)
2 yrs ago started to get neuropathy-stinging/stabbing pains that migrate to joints, muscle twitching all over
1 1/2 yrs ago started having upper ab pain (right under breast)-lipase was elevated=pancreas inflammation..I continue to get pains on and off with my pancreas. I think my "gerd" may have been due to my pancreas.

Had many scans, scopes etc.. nothing sinister or bad showing on my pancreas or stomach (no biopsies done)

Had blood test for celiac-clear. Had TONS of other labs, clear.

Oh also have horizontal lines and ridges on all finger nails and toes-they wont go away. Have had some hair thinning

Has anyone had pancreas issues or neuropathy from this? I cannt help but think its related.

Did you have  a positive blood test?

Hi.

My tests have not been positive, but then again I had been off gluten a month before I had blood tests.  I couldn't eat gluten long enough to even attempt upper colonoscopy.  My surgeon says he doesn't believe in the tests anyway, but I have celiac (he's 100% sure) and he wants me to stay off gluten.  I showed him painful lumps on the fronts of my shins, and he says that's erythema nodosum, and they will go away if I stay off gluten.  When I stay off gluten I feel good, the itching goes away, and I have energy and actually want to live.

So if you can convince yourself to stay off gluten, I'll bet you'll get a turnaround also!

You might like your nails better sooner if you use milk and honey hand soap.  My lousy nails love that soap.  Softsoap is the brand I use, but I used to be able to get it at Aldi too.

Oh, and the GERD symptoms took 2 or 3 months to improve for my coworker when she went off gluten.  That was her main symptom, but she also had low energy and was severely deficient in vitamin D and iron.  She has failed to use supplements.  My MD suggested 4000 IU vitamin D for me, and here she is with strongly positive labs and she isn't supplementing.  But finally she is free of GERD unless she eats gluten accidentally.

From the list below, ones that relate (IMO) to body pain would be:  Arthritis, nerve disease, neuropathy, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, osteomalacia, rheumatoid arthritis, and even Sjogren's.

On-line list I found:
Celiac Disease Research: Associated Diseases and Disorders. Disorders associated with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity include:  Anemia, arthritis, ataxia, nerve disease, neuropathy, brain damage, attention deficit disorder, autism, bacterial overgrowth, cancer, lymphoma, Candida albicans, casein or cow's milk intolerance, chronic fatigue syndrome, cognitive impairment, Crohn's disease, depression, diabetes, Down syndrome, dyspepsia, epilepsy, fibromyalgia, flatulence (gas), gallbladder disease, gastrointestinal bleeding, growth hormone deficiency, heart failure, infertility, impotency, inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal permeability, irritable bowel syndrome, kidney disease, liver disease, malnutrition, migraine headaches, miscarriage, multiple sclerosis, obesity, osteoporosis, osteomalacia, pancreatic disorders, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, sarcoidosis, schizophrenia, scleroderma, Sjogren's syndrome, skin problems, thrombocytopenic purpura, thyroid disease, and tuberculosis. Celiac com.

One-look dictionary is a great place to look up terms.

Hi!
The nail ridges and hair thinning can be from thyroid disease too. The two are related also. Have tests done for Hashimoto's disease. Get a Free T 4 and free T3 and a tsh done. Also the antibodies for it.
