Human bowel movements are not my favorate subject. As bowels are formed and sent to the colon, small pieces of bowel are excreted that form a stool. If for any reason you want to inspect your bowels, the excreted pieces are about one to two inches long and twist together to form a  rope-like bar(for a better word). Your bowels are soft or hard depending upon it liquid content. Use of probiotics with live cultures that dissolve in your intestines and are not killed by stomach acid do the best job of keeping your bowels together. It can take a week or more for probiotics to treat your bowels so you have manageable bowel movements.
