A second time around.

I had the decompression surgery in 2014.  I was diagnosed with chiari malformation in 2014 and had my surgery a few
months afterwards.  I am wondering if there have been any cases of a return of chiari malformation after the first surgery.

Hi DebraLynn and welcome to the Chiari forum.

Return of Chiari or symptoms? Chiari does not go away as it is a malformation of the skull, surgery is done to restore CSF flow and slow progression of a syrinx if one is present or prevent one from forming......

Yes, it is possible to require a 2nd surgery...the reasons differ from person to person.....it could be not enuff bone was removed or too much was removed..scar tissue may have formed causing yet another CSF obstruction..or a related condition may have been present that was unknown and the symptoms from that are triggering the Chiari symptoms to flare again....

May I ask do you know what all was done during your first surgery? did you have a laminectomy of C1  and C2? A dura plasty? if so, what type?

Lastly did you have ALL related conditions ruled out?
