I've gotten a lot of help with acupuncture. I was skeptical at first but I am so thankful I gave it a try. I don't know if that's what you meant by alternative medicine but hopefully this is helpful.
I am not sure if this can be considered alternatively medicinal. I bought (super cheap!) a treadmill that a YMCA in my area was getting rid of. On nights of my worst RLS, I walk at a slow pace for ten or so minutes. Doing it may simply make me tired enough to fall asleep. But, some nights it does seem to work pretty well to quiet my restless legs. I feel a lot of empathy for your mother - Chiari, and all that comes with it, is bad enough. But she also has difficulty sleeping, which probably intensifies her symptoms, not to mention drive her crazy. I feel for her, but she has a very loving and supportive daughter. For that, she is blessed.
Hi I did some research on both restless legs and nerve pain and treatments are similar. Exercise by walking,do not sit for extended periods. Some may respond to massage and geranium oil, warm soaks, while others may prefer using ice packs.
As for meds, have her tested to rule out it being a side effect from current meds or low levels of vitamins and minerals. Magnesium is one that tends to affect many of us and it is not always caught.
Other possible causes could be a syrinx, tethered cord,or a post op issue.
Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.
Did you mom's Drs check to be sure this is nerve damage. Many with Chiari also develop restless leg syndrome which can feel like you described.
