Hi...I had massage b4 and after dx and the MT stayed away from the neck.....and I loved it...massage is something that always helped me.

Deep tissue would deff hurt, so I have never gone that route....

I felt terrible after it but he told me it was " normal" but since surgery Ive stopped going so I just won't start up again LOL but yes I had my second surgery on July 22 with dr heffez in Wisconsin he figured out that I had the worst case of cerabellum slump that he had ever seen and my first be did not decompress the brainstem he just sewed a patch In that eventually was sopose to turn to scar tissue. Can u believe that, scar tissue in my brain! Anyways , dr heffez took the remainder of the patch and all the scartissue out decompressed thebrain stem then put a bovine patch in then put a metal plate in to fix the slump. I'm feeling ok it's slow I just hope this works! I hope everything is ok at home with u?

Hey Molly! I've wondered how you were feeling. I've not been reading the list for a spell due to things going here at home. But I wasn't aware of a second surgery? Hopefully that has improved things a bit.

Accutally, my MT has been a friend for years so perhaps he put a bit more into this but he said he spoke with several specialists in the field. Including on older Indian Doctor. She had told him that because they can not actually see the degree of nerve and or csf blockage or the cause of the blockage that the proceedure could actually put the patients life at risk. I personally don't totally understand his answer as to why but basically he said the Cranial Sacral is designed to 'really' move things around and forces the CSF to flow. From his understanding the problem lies with the cause of blockage in a Chiarian, the brain. It is our brain doing the blocking and when they try to force that to move it is possible to cause stroke, para or even death. Back before my surgery he had started to use this procedure on me. Lower back was WOW great then he got up near mid back and it got worse and worse until I made him stop up near the shoulder area. The next weeks or so I had stroke like symptoms, right side face drouping, no right arm strength, no right leg strength [actually dragging the leg] and yes as you say sick as a dog.

I can not say that I understand why- However based on his research and my personal experience I would strongly recommend any Chiarian stay away from Cranial Sacral Thearapy.

before my second surgery I was going to massage 2 a week and cranial sacral 1 a month to try to get relief. I found cranial sacral made me sooooo nasous(sp?) srry having a chiari moment can't remember how to spell that word it means feeling like I was going to throw up LOL I would be that way for atleast a week after I hated it! But I did like the massage! It left me very sore tho cause I did deep tissue but I think it helped a lot to lossen me up.

So glad to hear I can go ahead with it!!  My neck and shoulders are sooooo tight....Not sure if it's Chiari related or just the stress of the last 4 months adding up, but a massage would be nice!

I also have checked into MT as a means of some relief. It does calm things abit. I also asked on this forum and others a while back about Cranial Sacral Therapy. The replies where few but very mixed. Thus I asked the question of my friend who would have preformed the procedure. It took approx 2 mos before he got back with me as he was asking around with some specialists. He finally came back to me and said that after what he has learned about Chiari and the procedure he will not preform it on a Chiarian.
The massage he restricts to only the outer shoulder and back areas.

I get massage therapy once a week along with physical therapy. the massage helps the shoulders/neck area so much. they dont do much around my neck and back of head. They also to alot of the bones in the skull manipulation. helps the CSF flow and making things even. I would say do the massage, just request they only stick to the shoulders, back area, nothing too close to the neck. Hope it gives some relief for you

Now I am wondering...Is it more of a concern with the chiropractor aspect as opposed to massage?
