Can a chiari malformation cause Absence seizures that turn into violent seizures?

I am 23 and I was recently diagnosed with a Chiari 1 malformation. I have been experiencing Absence seizures for some time now. Though starting last night I have had shaking and violent seizures. When I called the doctors office the nurse said she wasn't sure if it would cause such a thing. Everything I have read on the internet has seemed to contradict itself. When I saw a surgeon and scheduled my decompression surgery for the spring he showed me the MRI and pointed out that there was no room between the malformation and the skull. I am asking if the seizures can progressively get worse from the absence seizures to violent ones or if there is possibly something else wrong.

True Chiari alone may not cause seizures....I have Chiari but not had the seizures you experience....we are all different and you may have a related condition that is causing this for you....but we have had many DX'd with Chiari that have developed seizures and or epilepsy.....

I know this is all so confusing and frustrating....do some research on Drs and find a true Chiari specialist....having the right Dr is key!

Know you are not alone.

Right now I am just seeing a neurologist, Neurosurgery, and my family doctor. I have been having absence seizures for years but they just recently started getting violent with the shaking and I have bit my lip and lost some control of functions. It takes me almost 15 hours to be able to walk normally again after the big seizures and they last about 6 minutes but are starting to get worse. I am not sure, everyone seems to contradict each other. One site said yes they can cause it one said no they can't cause the seizures. My family doctor and the surgeon said they wouldn't cause it its probably just stress. I have never been so confused or felt so alone in my life.

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

Some have reported developing seizures pre and post of ....some DX with Epilepsy.

For some it gets better and for some it can get worse....we are all different and no way to know what the outcome may be.....

How long are you having these seizures?

Is your Dr a true Chiari specialist?
