Chiari and syrinx

I've recently been diagnosed with chairi along with a syrinx.
Does that mean I should have surgery?

  A CSF flow study is done with a CINE MRI...they do a regular MRI then bring you out to add  contrast and a BP clip...this part of the MRI is done in real time...moving pics opposed to still shots you get from the regular MRI...it is a longer time in the tube but well worth having it done.

I also had swallowing issues , had a swallow study...nothing showed but it is fine post op....so Chiari was affecting it.

I have severe headaches since 2009. There have been many times I could have smashed my own head off a wall it was so painful.
From last year I developed pain and stiffness around neck, back and upper arms. I was referred to a rheumatologist who sent me for an MRI. This picked up the syrinx so she sent me to a neuro surgeon. He is now going to look at the csf flow. Not quite sure how.
I have some strange things like difficulty in swallowing but I'm not sure if it is associated.
I'm in the UK. It is affecting me a lot as I'm just always in some type of pain.

  Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

Most times you will be told if you have a CSF obstruction surgery is warranted as it can lead to the formation of a syrinx (Syringomyelia)...which left untreated can lead to paralysis....so, depending  on symptoms, and size of your syrinx your Drs may suggest surgery. With a syrinx it can stay the same size over a long period of time and symptoms kept at bay...however, it can also increase in size very rapidly too and then you could need emergency surgery....

Take the time to locate a Dr you feel confident and comfortable with...discuss your options and conditions should you decide to hold off....only you and your Dr can make this decision.
