Chiari malformation problem.

hi, I got told that i have chiari malformation in january after passing out due to cronic headaches at the top of my spine and lower back part of my head. recently i have been having worse and worse headaches and today they got so bad that my eye sight went blurry and my nose started bleeding i just thought it may be nothing so waited around 20 mins the nose bleed stopped and the headaches calmed.
The doc's have got me on Gabapentin and Tramadol and have been on amatriptilyn ,codiene and oramorph.

Just wondering if the chiari would cause a nose bleed during the cronic headaches.

I know this is an old post but i have chiari which developed due to shunt overdraining and experience nose bleeds also especially when i strain and aggravate my cerebellum. It doesnt happen often but when it does i certainly am able to link it to my chiari. Before my chiari diagnosis i never experienced nose bleeds ever.

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

Am I right to assume then your Chiari is acquired due to the shunt ? And that you have a shunt due to IIH?

Everything inside our skulls are is so close together it is possible that when we have pressure because of CSF obstruction or overproduction of CSF other areas could get compressed....our sinues , pituitary glad....etc....
Yes you are right. My cerebellum herniated after years of constant overdraining and low pressures. I am one of the rare a
Ones as i eventually had my shunt clamped as my IH eventually resolved itself. Its unfortunate i was left with the Chiari.
The medical term is acquired Chiari or low lying tonsils since the overdraining caused the cerebral tonsils to herniate and that is not Chiari.....Chiari is a malformation of the skull...but far too many Drs use the size of herniation to classify it as Chiari.....
Even tho the techincal term is not Chiari, unfortunately the symptoms are the same and treatment is the same......
I wonder what caused you to overproduce CSF to warrent the shunt and what caused it to resolve on it's own.....?

I have meant to bring up nosebleeds before....

when I was in high school I would get daily nosebleeds.....like holy man nosebleeds. When my headaches were really bad blood would literally pour out of me (like a fountain...it was bad, and for like 30 mins+) to the point where I probably should have gone to the hospital....but my headaches were always nearly gone after that.

I used to have frequent nosebleeds when I was in colege! Mine where related to stress I think!

OMG...I used to get daily nosebleeds when I was in my early teens....then they eased as I approached early adulthood. I still get one every now and then; however, I never noticed the correlation between the severity of the headache and the occurrence of a nosebleed.  Hmmm....I wish I'd been more observant back then!!

Just so u know surgery is not a cure for Chiari, only a means to restore flow of the CSF and slow progression...some people do well with surgery, while others have gotten worse post op....

But, the malformation is of  the skull...u can not cure a congenital condition, only treat it.

As for the sarcoidosis not sure as I am not a medical professional.....have u talked with a true chiari specialist?

It has only just started to happen. but it seems that the nose bleeds seem to ease the headaches off . The docs wont do the operation to cur4e chiari as i also hae been told i have sarcoidus in the brain nervous system and this can be fatal if i have the op . i dont really know where i stand with curing this problem .

You are the first I've seen to say you get nose bleeds. I do, as well, almost daily.  But not profuse.  I don't know I'd mine are from Chiari, but they started after I hit my head (also same time all my other symptoms seemed to "explode").

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

I am not sure about the nose bleeds being just from Chiari, it does make me wonder if it could be ICP...increased intercranial pressure.....

The blurry vision is very typical for those with chiari.....we all can be affected differently by this, so just bcuz I am not familiar with chiari and nose bleeds does not mean there are not more out there with this issue.

It is important for u to find a well experienced dr , so we do have a list of the members drs for u to use to research drs, the list is not a referral.

I am happy to welcome u to our group, but sorry u had to seek us out.
