Sorry for posting on an old thread but I have the same issue with lights. And driving. It just so happens in the morning when i have to drive my kids to school the glare is right in my eyes and it gets to the point that my eyes get itchy LOL. But yea the lights drive me crazy. My family is always coming into whatever room I am in and turning on lights and I'm like what are you doing!? LOL  Crowds bother me too. I can not stand it. I took my kids to the museum on free day last summer and swore I would never ever do that again. I thought I was going to crawl out of my skin. As far as wal-mart goes, I have learned to go early in the morning, when not alot of people are there. Otherwise I can't handle it. I have actually left my cart in line and left the store because after being there for a while, trying to navigate around all these people, under the lights, then standing in line I just felt like screaming. I had to go. Anyway!

Hi Sheila

Very common..the combination of bright lights and motion would make me very ill too...and I'm post op. Just to use the computer I have to put the monitor on the darkest setting which drives my family nuts b/c they all say they can't see it!! If I could wear sunglasses all day I would....the worst for me is the glare.

Sounds like you had a bad episode of vertigo which is very common and sometimes you don't know what will trigger it until it's too late. I know I feel very sick trying to track any type of motion, I have to look away. I find this is slightly better for me since surgery, but still a problem some days.

Nice to meet you :)

I noticed last night as I am rehabing half of my house, that ceiling fans that have lights attached to them are a HUGE no no for me....at least on at the same time...i was putting my oldest sons closet together and fell right over....got very nauseated and felt like i was spinning when in fact I was laying on the floor. And that was all in a matter of 3 minutes of being in the room with the ceiling fan and light on together. I never noticed it much before but as time goes on I am figuring more and more things out.

Has anyone else ever had this or soemthing similiar happen to them? Wondering if it's just me or if it is common for us?

Hi Sheila...the florescent lights r not as bad, but still bother me.....and I also noticed the other day, switching from natural light to florescent or vice versa is not good either....we r slow to adjust and feel the adjustment...lol.....

But I do still have this issue after surgery : P

I know this thread is old but I was happening to read it and thought I was the weird one that couldn't tolerate flourescent lights and loud noises and crowds and the snow issue. Boy am I glad I'm not the only one. No wonder why I like being by myself most of the time. Never thought to mention this to my drs as I thought it was just me being crazy. So glad it's not. I even went to the point and got Full Spectrum bulbs to put in all the lights at home and even got them to put at my desk at work. Seems to help a bit better.

Have any of you who have had surgery noticed that it get better after surgery?

Most of the time chiari goes undetected for years or a lifetime, just like on that episode of CSI,, they found it after the young man was having an otopsie.  It happens all the time, chiari is not caused by head trauma according to the doctors.  I have been told that it is congenital or genetic, my daughters are thought to have the genetic form of chiari, but others say that it is not ture either.  SO I don't know if that helps your question or nor.

Well, I don't know if you still check the answers here, but I guess they saw your msg or something. The last released season of House M.D, the sixth, on episode 19 they have a patient with chiari. check it out, it was only a brief diagnose and comment but for sure it's interesting for us. xo

I thought it was just anxiety! The docs have been telling me that for so long, I guess I bought in to it!
Crowds are my biggest thing, and there are times when I just can't handle the noise associated with group settings like shopping. I don't FEEL anxious, but I do get the dizziness, the swimming vision, etc.

I know I'm saying this again...but I am still so amazed by finding our that all these bizarre things that I have lived with for years (and I mean like up to 20) are happening to other people too!! I always told myself that it happened to normal people but there was this little voice in the back of my head saying "something's wrong!" Plus, I had been convinced by doctors that is was anxiety and was "all in my head" which it was but not the way they thought! Everytime I think that I have matched every possible symptom I have with someone else, someone brings up something else and I realized I've experienced that too! Crazy...but coming on this forum has been the best thing for me, I don't feel like I belong on another planet anymore!!

I am soooooooo glad I mentioned this bcuz I thought it was just me : )

I also have an issue when it gets too loud, but I have seen others with that issue, but never heard neone mention the lighting.

When I mentioned it b4, I was unaware it was the light, and thought it was just the checkerboard flooring and the people.....I think it was all of it.

I agree, thanks goodness for the comp...otherwise I would be lonely and very antisocial!!

That I'd add my two bits...fluorescent lighting kills me!! I told my doctor about how as soon as I'd go in a store I would feel all out of it and spinny and could barely even focus on what I was doing, it was really scary!! That prompted her to tell me it was a panic attack but I really couldn't understand it, I even made a joke like maybe it was cuz I spend too much money on groceries that's triggering it!! Later on, as symptoms became worse I noticed all my brain fog and vision symptoms would get so much worse as soon as I stepped in Walmart, grocery store ect and I finally figured it out that that is what is plus being combined with a crowd which has always made me dizzy. Still can't deal with that now, as soon as I start to speak to someone in a situation (like at the kindergym just last week) it's like everything starts to shut down, I get dizzy and it physically hurts to keep on talking, it makes my head hurt. So I think most of us are unfortunately doomed to be antisocial...thank goodness for computers!!lol

Chadry...yes the crowds...OMG yeah ...I hated passing classes in school....I posted a few months back where I went into a grocery store with my DD and she had to help me to a seat....it was teh lights and the people and the checkerboard flooring !!!

Not sure if u remember me mentioning then...but yeah too many people in an area moving every which direction makes me feel as weird  as the lighting : )

Just thought I would chime in here. I have been like that for years. I don't have Chiari but I have the same problems in stores and with lighting. It makes me feel so weird that sometimes it triggers an anxiety attack. I am not sure what triggers it but I am so glad you mentioned this and I am not crazy when it comes to this. I also get this when I am in crowds. In crowds I get a very dizzy feeling when people are walking around me. I used to go to a big flea market but I stopped, I could not handle the way it makes me feel. Very off balance and just plain weird. This feeling is somewhat different than the lighting in the stores.

Thanks...I was beginning to think I was weird...lol.....or weirder....lol.....but yeah snow does that to me as well. I always need sunglasses outside and a hat.....or I get major HA's....I was always like that.

In a store like Kmart....I feel almost like i am getting tunnel vision and I walked into a cave....and my head feels sooooooo weird/strange???

Strange you would ask that, but yes. Esspecially if it is parabolic fixtures. If the light is disfused such as with indirect lighting using florescents then I'm ok. Otherwise it tends to trigger vertigo and or HA.

I have a similar effect with snow, clean fresh snow on the ground here now. Just went out to clear a path in case we 'had' to go somewhere... took me forever... need my 4x4 back so I can just drive over it. But the reflection from the snow forces me to wear sunglasses.

HI Wolf,

Glad it wasn't just me.....I know what u mean...
.........may I ask...do u have an occasion to feel weird under florescent lighting?

Yes, selma I was disturbed a few points in the show really. At one point I just didn't like the way the chiarian was portrayed, probably just me being critical.

But I did like the small portion with the graphical about what happens to the person with whiplash. It kind of validated how I feel at times with very slight unexpected movement.

Hi I did see it and am really disturbed by the way many drs feel it is ok to be involved in  contact sports with chiari pre and post op...and I feel info like this  contradicts that.
