Choking, gagging?

Hey all. I hope everyone is having a decent "good" day today. As for me, I'm not at all. I developed an uber severe HA in the evening. My rt eye is cloudy in my peripheral vision. I thought I was having bad glare on my glasses at first. I've had this sx before, it comes and goes. I guess it's typical for papilladema(optic nerve swelling).

What's Really concerning me is that I'm having horrific pain at the base of my head and top of neck. It's knd of radiating outward and I almost feel like it's choking me. I've had trouble swallowing, gagging on food and my meds tonight. I feel like I have a lump in my throat. My voice even sounds weird.

Has anyone else had this symptom? Did it get better when the pressure let up and the HA eased? What should I do if it doesn't let up? Thanks for any info, suggestions.

TTFN,
Jenn

That's horrible, I'm so sorry!! I know what it can be like with 3 kids and trying to maintain daily life when everything seems to be getting worse..

I had the choking sensation often, the lump in the throat and the voice loss..it was one of the first things that started to affect me. At the time, it was thought to be due to me being hypo thyroid but it never got better. Do you get throat spasms? I used to get that really bad and it was such a weird feeling.

To me, it is a sign that things are progressing, so I am glad that you are seeing someone that will look into it. Has anyone checked your gag reflex? When my NS checked mine, it was realized that I had no feeling at the back of my throat, which was a major reason why I was choking. I definitely had one before all this.

Good news is, after surgery, things have got a lot better with swallowing and I even have got some sensation back in my throat!!

Good luck on Monday!

Thanks guys. I've not had it so severe before. I've had some issues with food and pills getting stuck in my throat and having to drink tons of water to flush it out, but never that tight, choking sensation before. It's still there. Not fun. I've had to learn to chew my food really well, that's for sure.

I have an appt with my PA on mon to go over my sx, update my chart, and make sure my Opthamologist report and slip-and-fall accident report from Urgent Care is all there before we send copies off to UCSF. Hopefully my cardiology report will be back by then too. I had a nuclear stress test, ultrasound, etc recently: full work-up.

I'll be sure to discuss the choking and tight throat sensation. My head is still awful this morning. I can't stand to move my head, light is killer. It was awful getting the older kids off to school. At least my hubby is back in town today, to help out a little with our 2 year old.

Hi Jenn,

So sorry to say but yes the gaging is a chiari issue....and the voice as well...try to sing and see if ur voice stops working....this is voicebox paralysis....I experienced it as well as the raspy voice we tend to get.

I also tend to gag on my own saliva at times.....but, the swallowing issues r an indication that ur chiari symptoms r progressing if u have not had this b4.The lump could be reflux related which many chiarians have or it could be a thyroid issue we all tend to have to deal with too.....ask ur dr about Hashimoto's.

I am sorry you are having this problem. Yes I have experienced this and it did ease up eventually however if it is still causing you problems you need to chat with your Doctor, I think we should report any symptoms to our doctors anyway but if they are causing problems that put you at risk of something like choking then it is better to get it checked sooner than later.
