Dealing with symptoms while at work

Attending drill weekend (for the reserves) right now. The first sergeant (big guy) asked me (today) why I missed his formation yesterday. Told him my leg was still kinda numb. I explained that I had went to the ER on Friday (below) because my left side was numb. He repeated what I said out loud so everyone in the office (about 8 people) could hear it. NICE. GRRRR! He just said MMM-HMMMM! In front of the commander.
Per the Privacy Act I don't have to tell him what happened at the hospital. Just provide him the paperwork. It didn’t happen on drill weekend and I am paid as a civilian through the week.
However, here is what happened: 4 June 2010: ER visit today for left leg being numb. Arm was not numb. History of TIA (mini-strokes) is why I went. Could not lift leg off bed when asked by ER DR. DR ordered cat scan. It came back with no bleeding. Released and told to follow up with CC and NL.
It WAS very hard getting out of bed and moving yesterday. Fell out of bed when getting up. I am NOT taking advantage of my condition and it is hurting me mentally to know people are implying that. Someone else said that I had gone through the drive-thru at our contracted restaurant. TOTALLY untrue. I didn't even eat there. :(
The military is a different type of career. We are required to be physically healthy and deployable. CM will probably get me medically boarded out. My soul has finally accepted that my career will most likely be over in the near future. However, I am trying to stay in as long as possible since this has been my career for 13 years.
Any advice?

I would ensure that you have all the medical documentation from all things that happened to you in the military service.  From the time that you went for not feeling well even if it was in basic training to Advanced training to your first duty assignment and so on.  - take my word on this one.

If possible go to where ever your medical records are kept and get a duplicate set made.  They are your records and you have a right to a set of them if you do not already have a set of them.  Do not let someone tell you that you do not have that right.  Some might tell you that you do not.  THEY are very wrong...

When the time comes; ensure that all the doccumentation is reviewed when you go before the medical review board.  I am not sure if you will go with your packet or if just your packet will go.  They may just want your packet - you may be able to request to speak to the review board.  The worst they can tell you is NO!!!  I spent all my time in the National Guard.  They seem to do things a little differntly; you can file a complaint with your EEO off
icer with the actions with the way you explained the actions of the top kick.  He was way out of line.  It is a two way street - he should know his limits.  He was very un professional in his actions in the way that he handled this.  He should have called you into his office with the commander or something or your supervisor.

If you have to go out ensure that you get every thing that you have earned in the last 13 plus years in the army, it is only 1% of the public that will serve in the military without a draft.  THANK YOU FOR SERVING !!!

Hi I understand ur reluctance to give up ur career....it defines who we r to the point we r afraid who we will become with out the job/position.

It is  just as  scary as the moment we realize we r graduating high school and will not have that same routine and friends to help us get thru the day.

I can not advise u on what to do or how long u can do it...u will have to figure it out...but listen to ur body. Unfortunately there is no way to know if ur symptoms may calm down or intensify....

I too developed the numb leg and I know how odd it is ...it just started one day and I have had it off and on since...even after surgery I get it occasionally.

AT a little over 1 yr post op I am still trying to figure out my next step as to who I am bcoming as a result of chiari....but I know this, Life is what we make of it, not what we get.

Chin up

Hi, Thank you for your question. Your leg numbness could be due to injury to a nerve, pressure on spinal or peripheral nerves (neuropathy), vitamin deficiency, lack of blood supply due to cholesterol plaque from atherosclerosis in the extremities, viral infection and use of certain medications.  In addition, atherosclerosis can also cause pain, numbness, and tingling while walking and they can also reduce blood supply and lead to numbness. Please consult your doctor to get all these possibilities evaluation in your case for further assessment. Hope this helps.
