Decompression post op

Hello,
This is my first post on this forum but I could use some feedback.

My sister and I have both been diagnosed with Chiari 1 Malformation.  18 days ago, on Feb 2, she underwent decompression surgery due to the discovery of a syrinx.  Since she was discharged, her condition has deteriorated.  She is in terrible pain, has lost 20 lbs, vomits frequently, cannot walk, etc.

For those of you who have experienced this, how long was the post op recovery and what did you experience?

Thank You.

i had decompression on feb 8 because i have syrinx and i have been recovering well. i was walking fine and only puked 1x at the hospital. my neuro assessments were all well. i came home 3 days post-op and have been doing well at home. that is my experience.

oh my gosh! how was she when she left the hospital? i dont believe they should have discharged her if she weren't walking already. and i agree with everyone else, they should have prescribed her a lot of meds to keep her comfortable.. especially anti-nausea meds. i am so sorry she has to go through this! i think she should get back to the dr's to get some answers.

I also agree with Selma.  She need's something for the vomiting.  I had this issue while in the hospital and if it goes unatended it could cause a CSF leak.  Keep us updated, but please call the Dr. and get some answer's and relief for her.  Wish you the best.  Your in my Chairian prayer's.

Selma is right on! Get back to the hospital and they will probably (should!) do another MRI. Who was the neurosurgeon?

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

18 days post op and still vomiting?....did she talk to her NS?...this is not right...she needs meds  to help her stop vomiting, and she should not be in that much pain. some is to be expected.....

She should have been walking b4 she left the hospital., she is home?

Does she feel worse when she is upright?...if so,. this may be a CSF leak, she should call her Dr.
