Dr. downplayed syrinx

Dr. downplayed syrinx

I have been through a work comp nightmare since slipping getting out of a truck hitting back of head and neck on running boards 5 months ago.Diag with concussion, post concussion syndrome, occipital neuralgia, whiplash, facet joint pain c2-c3
Symptoms, headaches, upper back and neck stiffness & pain, hot flashes, sweat alot, dizziness, ringing ears, feel like have water in rt. ear, irratable, tired all the time, among other symptoms. CT scans and Mri of brain normal. Neurologist injections in occipital nerves twice (no help) ordered me to ortho dr. which ordered Mri of neck said report was negative
except syrinx at c6,c7 which he downplayed as probably born with it without looking at mri just going by report. Had injections into c2 facet joints today(ouch !) also went to one physical therapy session 2 weeks ago (ouch)Ortho dr. said discontinue therapy. My question is should I be concerned about this syrinx? Too early to tell if injections today will help
Thanx

Hi, ...many with a syrinx can tell u that they do indeed cause symptoms, while many drs seem to feel that since u were born with it, it is  of no consequence......

However, a fall like urs can trigger symptoms....even if urs was totally asymptomatic.

Chiarians also have trouble getting drs to listen and we have found that u need a  true chiari specialist for both to get a closer look.

I can suggest u find a chiari dr near u to get a 2nd opinion...u may need to travel as many of us do...but it is well worth it.Please see our chiari specialist list for names of drs to research.

I would also be sure to get copies of all MRI and tests done so far and going forward.

Why does he think you were born with it? A lot of people who have a syrinx acquired it from some sort of trauma.

PT on people with a Syrinx is not a good idea, I have a Syrinx in the same area and had some PT on my shoulders, the Physiotherapist would not work on my neck as it was feared it would make things worse. The best thing you can do is find an NS with experience of treating Syringomyelia, if you were born with it or if it is acquired it can still cause problems, mine is congenital.
right now you need to know if it is causing problems.

Hello and welcome!  I think you absolutely have to be concerned about this.  Leaving it alone without getting all the answers is not an option.  The fact that it is workers comp may make getting to the right doc pretty difficult.  You need to see a specialist who devotes his practice to Chiari/ syringomyelia.  It is possible this doc could tell you that he will monitor it but you need to hear that from someone who knows about a syrinx.

There is a list here in the forum of docs that other members have used and liked.  It may be necessary to travel and get more than one opinion.  But I think you have to.  It is possible that a syrinx can lead to paralysis, not always but there is that possibility.  Good luck to you!
