Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

Chiari is a malformation of the skull which can cause the cerebral tonsils to herniate....the herniation causes symptoms so low lying tonsils or Chiari can have the same symptoms.
A true Chiari specialist would be able to help you determine the cause of her symptoms....there are many issues/conditions that can cause these same symptoms.....Syringomyelia, ICP, CCI, POTS, ,EDS, a retro flexed odontoid, basilar invagnation,....and these are related to Chiari then there is Lymes, Lupus and MS that can also cause similar if not the same symptoms but are not related to Chiari.

There are many Drs that use the herniation to classify if one has Chiari or not and they look at the size of the herniation and that is not the best way to review someone with symptoms as they will miss any other possibly related condition.

Checking for an obstruction to CSF flow is very important so a CINE MRI should be done no matter how large or small the herniation....if it is obstructing flow it posses a problem.

If you need help locating a Dr let us know we do have lists of Drs for different areas for you to use to research Drs.

This was very helpful. I am curious to know if there are any Chiari specialists in South Carolina? Thanks!
Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

We do not have any specialists listed for SC at this time, but we do have for NC, MD, FL....if there is another state  you can travel to, let me know and I will post those for you. If you locate a Dr in SC, please let us know whom you found so we can add it to our list.

Any herniation beyond the magnum is called chiari, however not all chiari is symptomatic, many times large herniation do not develop any symptom, and other times small to no herniation called (chiari zero) can cause alot of symptoms, only then when alot of symptoms occur a decompression surgery can be helpful, many people go all their lives without knowing they have chiari and they live a normal life, take it easy, the good part is that you noticed the chiari, contact a chiari specialist, do all tests needed, everything is gunna be alright.
