Shane99 condensed our list of drs. (Thanks Shane!)
This list is not a complete list of possible Specialists - Please continue to add.
This is not any kind of "Official" list of Chiari Specialists! These are simply NeuroSurgeons that we patients have listed as liking. No background checks have been made about them. If you wish to follow up, please research on your own. If you are comfortable with your current doctor and he/she is actually qualified to perform Chiari Decompression Surgery, then don't let us tell you any differently. This list is just to help people connect with NeuroSurgeons. It is not intended as a referral, please research all Drs.

Dr. Judith Gorelick in Connecticut is not a chiari specialist as it says on the list of specialists. She did my surgery and I spent the next year deteriorating. When she couldn't help me she told me it was in my head and told me I had anxiety. I got to the point that I was bedridden and could not to anything for myself. I finally got diagnosed with EDS by a specialist and had severe instability in my neck. Also my cerebellum was literally coming out of my skull. There was nothing protecting my brain. I also had tethered cord which she did not find. Do not go to her. Finally after a year of suffering and losing everything I got two more surgeries to correct the damage that she did to my neck (it was broken by this point). I am finally recovering after surgery with Dr. Fraser Henderson in Maryland. He saved my life and is a true chiari specialist. He is very knowledgeable about chiari and its related conditions. Traveling is worth it when it comes to chiari.
Thank u for sharing ur experience, and I am sorry u had to go thru that. AT the heading of our list, it does say this list is not a list of specialists, rather it is a list of NS's that have treated the members here for chiari and the member if they liked their dr add them to the list.
There r many lists on line....and we do not copy them as u can not go by them and we encourage all members to research all drs to find the right dr for them.
I am so sorry u had that experience with that dr, and will take ur info under advisement.
I am glad u found Dr Henderson, he is a new up and coming go to Dr for Chiari.......
getting a dx of EDS b4 surgery can benefit all chiarians and save them much in the way of set backs with recovery.
I fought to have my husband seen by Dr. Green. But, because I don't take no for answer, he will be seeing Dr. Green. I believe with CM and SM, we all must really be proactive. I have only known about SM for 1 year. The lack of education within the medical community juat plain and simply makes me sick!! I will always advocate as much as I possibly can to have more attention paid to CM and SM.
Thanks for adding Dr. Green, he is awesome. I am having surgery with him on June 16th.
Good luck to you and your husband! Be prepared to wait a while to see him. My first visit I waited 3-4 hours before he saw me. I was so upset and about to leave until he came in. He is so kind and spent close to 2 hours with my husband and I. He is worth the wait!
The superintendent of our school district's wife died during chiari surgery this past November. Dr. Tew from Cincinnati was doing the surgery, I know there is an investigation into what happened because she was a strong 40 yr old woman. I don't know any of the details, so I try not to judge, but it was def enough for me to go else where.
Hello I am a new CM1 patient and would like to add my doc. Thanks to the initial poster for giving us new patients a start in searching NS all over. It is nice knowing I am not the only one! And yes is a CHIARI Specialist:
Dr. Danial Barrow
Although I am in the new process of finding out what is going on.. I first seen him in 2004, and he suggested that is was unclear of my condition but wanted to wait until my symptoms became worse before he suggested surgery. (At the time I was not having the serve headaches and other issues as now).. so I am back with him so determine my CM1.
Also is anyone having issues with their eyes being slightly crossed? I read that since the area in which the decompression is at, it is near the optical nerve which causes the blurriness but need to know about the crossing?
Hi, I am a newbie but have spent great hours reading everyone's messages and they have been very helpful, thank you.
I have a 8yr old daughter with CMI with syrinxs which caused scoliosis of 34 degrees. She was referred to Dr. Mahomar in L.A. Kaiser and she is scheduled to have decompression surgery and maybe other things which I don't remember since doctor really scared me with many facts and possible different scenerios.
I still have so many questions and still not sure if I'm doing the right thing by putting my baby through this traumaitc surgery when she only has mild neck pains time to time and surgery seems so... I'm sure I dont even have to describe what I'm trying to say... I'm so scared that once she has the surgery, if the outcome isn't as great then she will have to have second and even third surgeries...
I don't think I can put her through that again and again..
Should I wait jus a little until she is little bigger/older (not several years but just 5~6 months until I talk to few more doctors and get more feed back from helpful friends like yourselves...
Does anyone know Dr. Mahomar and are there anyone out there who didn't have the surgery and could tell me how their daily life is like or maybe recommend a specialist pediatric CM nureosurgeons?.... Please... help..

He is a pediatric Neurosurgeon but he will see adults with Chiari. Check out his website and you can email him and he will respond.
He was amazing and sees about 2-3 Chiari patients a week. so he knows his stuff, was even very well informed about Chiari 0.
There was a Dr at CC that did the minimally invasive procedure too, the only problem is not everyone is a candidate for that procedure....
I actually had that type of knee surgery and the surgeon told me he planned to use the procedure but it all depended on what was found once inside if he could proceed with the less invasive procedure or need to go with the basic surgery...lucky for me, it was the less invasive....
Thanks so much for posting this without this my life would be a crazy mess of doctors that dont know that they are talking about..oooh wait that pretty much explains the last 5 years of my life. But still thank YOU!!!
Since there are no NSs on here from KY I thought it might be good to add one. I haven't seen him yet but have an appt with him. I have met 3 other people who have had decompressions with him and have gone to him with Chiari. He's new to the area and so far only good stuff by fellow Chiarians...
Dr. Ondrej Choutka
King's Daughters Medical Center – Neurosurgical Specialties
Medical Plaza B
613 23rd Street - Suite G20
Ashland, Kentucky 41101 United States
(The only other one I have heard much about in KY is Dr. Shields and he got terrible reviews. I had an appt with him and canceled after reading the horrendous stuff on the internet about him. He was not a Chiari specialist, though, just someone who had experience with Chiari.)
Hello, everyone! Being in Florida, I was so excited to see Dr. Barth Green at University of Miami is a specialist on these conditions. When I tried to get an appointment, he was not on my insurance. Fortunately, the young man told me that there was an up and coming specialist in the area, trained under Dr. Green, and he referred me to him. I am now 4 weeks post-op and extremely pleased with this Dr.
Dr. Ryan Trombly
He has offices in Miami and Boca Raton. This man is amazingly talented. There is a bit of a wait to see him, but he never makes you feel pressured to hurry up and he answers any question you may have. This has been a difficult recovery, but he has been amazing through it all. If you live in Florida, I would highly recommend this neurosurgeon.
That would put MedHelp at a legal crossroads they do not want, this is a public forum and the Dr can find their name by using google, so no negative with their names, but we do warn via PM's when possible...meaning u give us a heads up b4 u go......
And by the Drs name not being on out list is also a way...we only put names on of Drs the members here liked,.
It is not a perfect system, and all members do have to research the drs to find the right one for them.
Dr. Todd Shanks
Norton Neurosurgical Institute of KY
210 East Gray Street Suite 1105
Louisville, KY 40202
Med. School, Internship and Residency at University of Louisville
Fellowship at Noton Leatherman Spine Center, Louisville, KY
Dr. Shanks did my decompression on Feb. 10, 2012. He did a great job as far as I can tell. He really takes the time to answer your questions and explain things. He is like me though, he talks really fast, so you may have to ask him to slow down, my mom did and he did the best he could and never acted offended. I don't think he "specializes" in Chiari, but he has had many patients with Chiari and knows his stuff. And he isn't the type to brush you off. If you aren't at the stage to need surgery, he follows up regularly to stay on top of the Chiari.
And for you ladies... he's not to hard on the eyes either. LOL.
Dr. Rob Parrish in Houston Texas is doing my Chiari surgery next Wednesday June 13!! He is a wonderful neurosurgeon, with a phd!! I did a lot of research and went through a selection process to choose him!! Did my pre-ops two days ago and asked the RN that I was with if she would be in on my surgery, she said no but I wish, everyone wants to be in on Dr. Parrish's surgeries, I hope you know, that you have one of the best doctors in Houston!! That made me feel so much more at ease with my upcoming surgery!! Just wanted to share that and suggest you to add him to the list!! Thank you!! God Bless!! :)
Hi, thanks for letting us know about this Dr and ur surgery, I will be sure to post a prayer thread for u.
We usually do not add a Dr to the main list until after the member gets thru post op to see just how they like how they were treated etc....but, will keep my eyes open to see what allu have to add about this Dr.
Not a Chiari specialist, not even a surgeon, but someone who understands the seriousness of a C. Malformation & how it may impact vision:
Dr. David Chesnutt
UNC Hospital, Chapel Hill, NC
Hi all I am bumping this up and reminding u all that this list is here to help u start ur research and is NOT a referral...not all Drs on this list can be considered a true chiari specialist and u can not tell if the Dr is right for u until u meet...so educated urself on ur condition and then decide what is best for u!!
I want to add dr.sahuquillo working and dedicating his life for chiari and related issues. He is treating the most difficult cases of chiari and related issues of whole spain and even further...i met those people
Vall d'Hebron Hospital
I saw Dr. Chitale in Georgia for my first NS appointment. He was the one that told me Chiari doesn't cause headaches, nor is there surgery for type 1 and told me maybe I was just stressed, that was why I had headaches. He is also not a Chiari Specialist, he is just capable of doing the surgery. As for Chiari Specialists in GA, I've yet to find a true specialist here that isn't a pediatric specialist. I saw Dr. Wray at the Atlanta Brain and Spine Care center on Peachtree Rd. He is really nice and ordered the other tests that are needed for Chiari for me. Although he believes different than what I read, he is really understanding and compassionate. I don't know whether I will keep him at this point or not, I'm waiting to see what he thinks of my CINE MRI. I have another NS in GA that I made an appointment with (also not a specialist), but his secretary knew what Chiari was and said he has quite a few of patients with Chiari and is capable of doing the surgery. Dr. Tariq Javed in Marietta. I will post update after I see him as well, and after I go back for the results of my CINE MRI with Dr. Wray.
Yes, if u go to the Health Pages there is a link to a list to the Ann Conroy Trust...which I am told r Drs that treat over there .....I would suggest u also research the Drs on the list and see a few to find one u r comfortable with,
Dr. John Walsh
Tulane University Hospital and Clinic
New Orleans, La. 70112
Proffeser & Chief,
Section of Pediatric Neurosurgery
1415 Tulane Avenue
Dr. Walsh performed my surgery and is a true specialist. I highly reccomend him to anyone in the area or otherwise. He also has a very good bedside manner. His staff is also well versed with Chiari and related conditions.
No problem ! I know that the guy listed here on the site as being in Louisiana no longer exists here to my knowledge, and I remember having such a hard time finding Dr.Walsh, that I hope this helps someone else the way he helped me :)
There is only one other specialist that I have found and he is a pediatric NS only, yet when faced with a caseof Chiari in a young girl, he contracted Dr Walsh to do the surgery out of network and in another hospital in which Dr Walsh did not work.
I am also interested to see how my new NL works out, in hopes of adding him here. There are almost never NL's that get it !
