Thanks a million for your input. As soon as I get the finer detials it will provide me with more information to communicate.
I remember that my dad mentioned that the fuild in the syrinx is now semi gelled.
Thanks
Each person experiences a different combination of symptoms depending on where in the spinal cord the syrinx forms and how far it expands. Syringomyelia can occur in association with other conditions, has your mom had a full health screening, or does she specifically have Chiari Malformation? If not treated surgically, syringomyelia often leads to progressive weakness in the arms and legs, loss of hand sensation, loss of bladder and other functions, and chronic, severe pain (at least these seem to be the most common symptoms).
Also do you know if she has or has developed hydrocephalus, in which spinal fluid accumulates in the skull, or a condition called arachnoiditis, in which a covering of the spinal cord--the arachnoid membrane--is inflamed? Either of these could cause new symptoms to arise.
The primary symptom of post-traumatic syringomyelia is pain, which may spread upward from the site of injury. Symptoms, such as pain, numbness, weakness, and disruption in temperature sensation, may occur on one or both sides of the body. Syringomyelia can also adversely affect sweating, sexual function, and, later, bladder and bowel control.Mostly it depends on where her syrinx is located. Even if it was caused by an injury rather than a disease, where it is can make all the difference. Because a syrinx can cause pain, weakness, and sensory impairment originating at the site of trauma.
It is so hard to tell what is "common" because each person's symptoms really are unique to the site of the syrinx, however I can tell you that I have experienced random numbness in my tongue (never burning), vertigo (even without a change in elevation), and heart palpatations that mimic a panic attack. These heart palps and the dizziness for me are related to sudden drops in my blood pressure - my doc found this by giving me something called a tilt table test, but I don't know if this phenomena is caused by the chiari or the syrinx.
I hope I have been of some help to you, I got some of my info from http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/syringomyelia/detail_syringomyelia.htm if you want to read more. One recommendation I have for you is if your mom's syrinx is in her neck, get her a good pillow, if it is in her back look into a good mattress!!! My husband got me a tempurpedic contoured memory foam pillow for mother's day, and it has worked amazingly! I recommend it to anyone - also don't be afraid of the price, if her insurance won't pay for it, it is tax deductable as a medical expense.
My mom suffers from syringomelia, she has a burning sensation in the tongue, vertigo and heart pressure that fluctuates. is this common. I am trying to get information to try and assist her.
many thanks
Hey I've seen pills online too that say they help syringomyelia, I was wondering the same thing! I did ask my neurologist about it, and she said it is possible, but she also said do not by any means order pills from the internet unless it is a trusted drug company. She claims it is very very dangerous, let's face it these people could just put poison in a bottle and say it's tylenol!
But she did recommend magnesium and folic acid for my syrngomyelia - however, before you go out and buy a suppliment talk to your doc. It is important to have your magnesium levels checked first because too much can be bad for you. Good luck.
