NS said his scan correct

Hi all

The saga continues!!!  The NS called me back today about Mikey's MRI. I asked him how the first scan could show an 8mm herniation, and the second one that he, the NS ordered showed a 4mm herniation.
The Ns told me that he had more faith in his MRI and that because Mikey's herniation is below the standard 5mm rule and that he has no blockage that he does not fit the criteria of Chiari I. I said so what does this mean if he is having symptoms? He said that we could bring him into the office and he could see what is going on with him.
So, could Mikey have symptoms with out having blockage?  The NS was not to quick to answer any questions over the phone.
Sorry to go on about this, but I am trying to make sense of this.

Just a worried Mom

My son did not have CSF flow problems noted, he did have a 20 mm herniation which caused problems due to crowding. Whether that maybe meant that there were problems with flow or not, I'm not 100 % sure, but there were no notes about this being an issue.

Looking at the MRI you could see where the crowding was occurring. So, in my son's case, yes there were chiari symptoms without flow blockage from what I understand. He did not have TC or syrinx.

Hang in there....you will find the answers you need. Not all drs think that it is a problem even at lower levels. My son's was very large and for a long time he did not have significant symptoms, so the reverse is often true, from what I have read.

All I can ask is this a chiari specialist?.....to be considered for surgery, besides having symptoms....a blockage of CSF and over crowding are looked at than quality of life......

There r chiari drs that believe in Chiari 0 which is a herniation less than 5 mm........I was told and I may have mentioned this is ur last thread but I was told my chiari after surgery is still at 2 mm and to expect to have chiari symptoms......

I do still have a blockage of CSF, but from a bulging disk......so to answer, can he have symptoms without a blockage...MHO is yes.....are they all chiari...possibly not...chiari related...more likely.....
