Not really Chiari related

I like most peppers. I use several types in cooking, seasoning, and sprinkling on my food. Black pepper is one of them, and none give me any trouble, of any kind.
There is 1 exception though.  The black pepper.
I can use it, without any problems, diet wise. However, the smell of it makes me sick to my stomach. I can't stand to be around it, and if it's a heavy smell, it will make me want to vomit. This has been for as long as I can remember. But like I said, in (and on) foods, does not bother my stomach at all.

Anyone ever hear of anything like this?  Anyone have any similar problem with food related smells?
(I'm male, so it's not morning sickness.........)

I don't have this particular problem with smells but I believe it... my 11 year old daughter just about goes crazy when I open a can of tunafish, even the smallest smell and she is gagging and puking instantly.  We have to be very careful around her with that smell.. hard part is that my son LOVES it so it does get tricky!  Our bodies are crazy things!!  Interesting!!

Hi...I know what u mean about smells...not sure y but there r things I just find totally offensive...I do not gag but, a few times have become nauseated.
Since I was a kid I found the smell of coffee very offensive...could have been the cheap stuff my parents perked...but I hated the smell so much I would never consider tasting it.

One smell and taste that does confuse me is tomato soup...now I love tomatoes...I will eat them just so( even tho I have to watch bcuz of reflux) but I love them, I love tomato sauce...but hate the small of ketchup and tomato juice...yuck....and tomato soup did cause me to vomit, so if i smell it...I must get away...far away....I think it is odd.

But there r times there is a odor or fragrance that just either gives me a HA or I find offensive.

There are a few smells that have repelled me over the years too....one of them is corn chips..weird I know, the smell actually makes me feel like I can't breathe...not an allergy or something b/c I can eat them but just can't smell them!!

There are other smells too that just seem to linger (cleaners, perfumes) and even the smallest amount drives me crazy and it seems to hang in my nose all day, long after that smell has gone by. It's frustrating b/c I would do anything to get rid of the smell!!

That's part of the problem. The smell doesn't bother my nose at all. I don't find the smell appalling, or offensive, at all.
I can't stand the smell of many perfumes, or (naturally) strong chemicals, but they don't bother me.

The smell of black pepper doesn't bother me in that way, it just makes me flat out sick to my stomach.

My former mother in law gets stomach sickness from the SIGHT of bananas. She has her neighbors come over when her grandchildren (from out of state) are visiting to give them bananas.

Bleach and cleaning supplies have always made me lightheaded. I have found that using more "natural" products has helped.

So u r not affected by the smell but from eating something with it on....hmmmmm and u eat all those other peppers...odd, but could be reflux to some degree.
Try a OTC pepcid b4 u eat it next time to see if that helps ne.

Selma:
No, I can eat stuff with black pepper, all the time.
If you put it on food, and the other odors mask the smell even if there is a lot, I will eat it and enjoy the flavor.
The smell doesn't bother my nose. I don't find the "odor" offensive to the nose or senses.  I smell Chanel number 5, and my nose shrivels up and I want to throw it a mile away.
I smell black pepper, and I think that's a decent smell. But, I will immediately start getting sick to my stomach from the smell.  I've had reflux since high school, and take meds for it daily.

I had a feeling it was more the reflux....I love pepper as well, but can not eat it or I too get sick...I can not have nething with pepper cooked in it...like sausage with green peppers and onions...I love the way it smells, but OMG I get sick even if I just have the sauce or the sausage.....

It is just one of the dietary modifications u have to make with reflux.

I thinking your missing what I say.

I can eat it all day long. I can eat something that has enough black pepper to melt an iron pan. It won't bother my stomach at all.

as long as I don't smell it.

wow...I re read this thread and I am sorry but I was having a tough time following what u meant.....

so, to eat it u r fine...to smell it u get sick...not offended just sick......hmmmm

it must trigger something and I must say I have no idea what.

If something made me sick like that u can be sure I'd avoid it..eating and smelling.....lol....

All I can say is that is just plain weird.... it does sound like my issue with the corn chips in a way though...

The smell isn't offensive to my nose either and I can eat them but the smell makes me feel like I can't breathe...so it does sort of the same thing to me but instead of stomach it affects something to do with my breathing (actually physically in my chest...not from the smell).

Make sense?
