Yeah Becky we all have been wondering too : )

I was willing to tell my story too, but I guess this is not the womans story, but she offered insight from her life to help with the story line....so , I am waiting : D

I'm a HUGE House fan, but for those of you who are going to watch this episode who don't normally watch this show it's NOT true to life at all! what so ever! Like Carolyn just said they'll hollywood it up like crazy.

Did anyone catch CSI a couple weeks ago? They had a chiari episode too. And when they did this guys autopsy his brain popped out of his head from all the "pressure". It was kinda  funny!

Yes...we had a thread going about it a few weeks ago...it is really great that Chiari is mentioned in TWO major shows!! Hopefully, people will watch it and the next time we tell someone what we've been dx with..they will have actually heard of it!!
Blank

Well I am hoping that since a real chiarian helped .... this will keep it realistic ...it is not her life, but she was to guide them in knowing how a chiarian felt...and the frustration we have going to drs...I pray it is all in there : )

Three weeks until our big, Chiari "HOUSE" episode! It airs on Monday, May 3, 2010 at 8pm Pacific on FOX and this episode is called "The Choice". I've been so blessed to be able to use my voice, on the behalf of all Chiariians, to help with this episode. I will never forget the excitement, butterflies, and giddiness that I got when I recieved the call from writer/producer David Hoselton and when I walked onto the HOUSE set and met some of the cast and crew (inFeb). It's been an incredible, life changing experience for me, but it also came with a lot of nervousness. I wanted for it to be perfect and for Chiari to be portrayed in a realistic manner as possible that truly demonstrates the pain we live with on a daily basis and how we are treated by those in the medical field and how it can affect our everyday lives. So, I encourage you to watch the show and tell everyone you know as well! That way, we can get the word about Chiari to everyone with a TV. No matter what happens, even if people just hear the word (and how to pronounce it) Chiari and get a glimpse of what we live with, well I'll consider it a success. I'm so grateful to have been a part of the episode and thankful to the HOUSE team. The cast and crew are all amazing, down to earth and caring people who want to use the power of TV to not just entertain, but shine light on these diseases. I had a great time in LA at Fox Studios with my best friend. We were given a personal tour of the lot, the HOUSE offices and then David took us on set where we met some of the cast, hung out with the crew, watched filming of some of the scenes for the episode and were shown around the "hospital". Standing in House's office was surreal! That's about all I can say for now. Yes, I'm a true "Chiarian" and have had 12+ surgeries related to CM in the past 5 years, so if you have questions, feel free to email me! Thanks for your support and make sure to catch the Chiari episode on Monday, May 3!

Peace to you all,
Laura Slyman

Here is a small synopsis I found online today, it kind of profiles all the shows.  I can't wait until after next weeks when we can see the preview!!!

A woman (Eva Amurri) questions her ailing fiancé about a past relationship while House and his team try to diagnose him. Away from the hospital, House, Foreman and Chase pay homage to Gladys Knight and the Pips, karaoke-style.

I pray, this groom is a different case that he will deal with  and not the chiari aspect of the show...and I am disappointed that chiari was not more of a promo for the preview.

Blank
1179332_tn?1297482590
Yeah that is a little disappointing but I'm not surprised..they will Hollywood everything up..
I haven't looked at the spoiler but I will..

As for the lactating, knowing House they will throw everything in it that they possibly can..from what I remember lactating when you are not supposed to (in either sex) is called galactorrhea and it is caused from a pituitary defect (too much prolactin..usually caused by a tumor) so not sure how they will tie that in to Chiari...but it is in the brain!! Side note: Galactorrhea can also be caused by hypothyroid!! Hmm...

Laura who helped with the show and met some of the cast during filming, posted this message on her Facebook:

"people - when you see the "House" promo for next week, yes it's the correct one. Just to remind everyone - it's Hollywood&"House", which means we'll be seeing unrealistic crazy stuff right along with the more realistic view I gave. They'll want to use the "crazy" stuff for the promos and what they choose is not "me" but a loose basis to maybe some symptoms, definitely not all. Still have to make it rare to House!"

well i was gonna post the same message kim posted from laura but she beat me to it lol I think the lactating is going a little too far even for House but hey its hollywood! I just hope they dont focus on that and show a least a hint of what chiari is really like.
Blank
1179332_tn?1297482590
Exactly...I hope they don't stray away from the real thing and the real symptoms..that would be soo disappointing!! The fact that they brought a person with Chiari in to confer with gives me hope that they are going to at least make an attempt to make it real!! We shall see...I can see more discussions coming this way after the 3rd!!

I wanted to tell people at work to watch the show, but now I am not sure.  I am hoping the show will be a way to educate people on Chiari and what it like.  But looking at the previews I am concerned they might get the wrong picture...  So I think I will watch it myself and if it's good recommend it to people to watch...
Blank

I sent out an email to everyone that I am friendly with at work (large company), which ended up being about 20 people or so. Some of them were very aware of my condition, others, as it turns out, didn't even KNOW I had a "condition". Even if the episode of House isn't true to life (which I REALLY hope it is), it will be enough of a conversation starter and talking point. Already, just my mentioning the show and episode has gotten quite a few people to google Chiari, where just my having it was not enough motivation to do so. Like I said, I hope it's a good dipiction, and I REALLY hope they do the decompression surgery... but if it isn't and if they don't, I can say "oh they had it all wrong..." and go into the differences and what not. It will be enough to get us talking about it
Blank
620923_tn?1335125657
U have a good point of view on that ...such a good vantage point for us all regardless of how Hollywood this episode is...it can still get a convo started : D
Blank
1179332_tn?1297482590
That's exactly what I thought too...as least ppl will be talking about it!!

I am a little late in on this conversation, but I do have problems with my pituitary and doctors have found no explanation other than the pressure from chiari is causing it. I have also read studies on pubmed of patients have had pituitary problems coinciding with the chiari, and the pituitary problems subsided after surgery. Just a side note for everyone so it may very well be  possible.
Blank
620923_tn?1335125657
Thanks for the insight on the possibility he has multiple things going on that could result in the lactating on this episode....seems we and I mean me...was so excited this was about chiari I didn't even give a thought that they may add a few other issues( not on our symptoms list) in to muddy it up.

Cant wait...My wife had the surgery in 2007 in Miami by Dr Green...We need more education and exposure.  parent should talk with their children since this is hereditary...God Bless

I have run across some mentions of pituitary problems with Chiari as well. So I'm pretty sure that is how they made the connection. I have to figure out when it's one here...so I don't miss it!!!! Can't wait!

I have had pituitary problems with the chiari and high pressure for years.  I have tumors on the anterior and posterior.  I had a very high prolactin level with breast discharge at one point and put on bromicriptine.  Since surgery I have not had high prolactin but continue hormone issues.  Including being unable to lose weight though I eat very little.  I have nad no help from any endos and have written them off.

Very disappointing.  The whole story was way out there and then right after surgery the guy is moving his head around like nothing happened.  What a joke.

Yes teh show may not have covered chiari like we all would have liked, but if u look at the link I added on the thread one  FOX news station did an interview with 2 chiarians and added a link to their website for more info on chiari...real info !!!

SO, some good is coming out of it : )

Hi All,

What a disappointment!  I told all our family members and friends to watch so they would know what my DD goes through and even they didn't think it was very well done.  I didn't think the patient was a very good actor, and too much emphasis on the gay thing and not enough detail on chiari.

My biggest beefs though are:

1) He didn't appear to be in very much pain!  If he was really having chiari pain, I think the last thing he'd be worrying about is his non-gayness.

2) It sure made decompression surgery look like a piece of cake!!!   Just some gauze slapped on the back of his neck and he's got all the mobility in the world in his head, neck and shoulders.  That is so far from real life.. not even close to what my DD and most, if not all, of you brave zipperheads went through.

Well, at least House said "Chiari Malformation" on TV.  And... I did like the karaoke scene.

Hugs to all,
Carrie in AK

I am late posting this because I left Tuesday for Milwaukee (Dr. Heffez).  Meaning after that sorry episode went off, I went to start packing.  What an embarrasement as I had people from my church watching and my family!  And who just "passes out" then sits right back up like "Hi!"  The ONLY thing I saw that even came close was putting pressure at the base of his skull helped with the headache.

I have never watched that show before and I won't ever watch it again.
Blank
1265199_tn?1271877477
Take a look at my post about "Hypo-metabolism".  I think it will give you some info to help with inability to lose weight.

I talked with Dr. Heffez about that yesterday and he said it will be interesting to see what happens there after we are all done with treatment/surgery.

I watched that show days before my son had his surgery and many of the sypmptoms were spot on. the loss of speach and yes the instant black outs however the post surgical scene was so completely misrepresented.  But atleast the public is hearing about the disorder more and more.
