Sinuses

So, DS saw Dr. M at UIHC. He was great, very thorough. He wants a follow up in six months, right now not enough symptoms for surgery but needs following - he's at 1.7 cm. If we can control the migraines (and now we know exactly why he's getting them - squeezed blood vessel - he made sure we saw it on the scan) with meds we can put surgery off indefinitely if he remains otherwise symptom free. Good news!

Not so good was his concern over the sinuses. He was very serious about his concern. We already had an ENT appointment at home because of not getting results with antibiotics - this struggle has been going on for like three years with the sinuses. Local ENT said nothing was wrong (wow, hope that five minutes you took to peek up his nose wasn't too much time for you) and said the NS and local doc were wrong. Dr. M said no way, he wanted DS to see a ped ENT at UIHC. We went yesterday and....chronic sinus problems. So, we added three meds to his already long list. They did a scope which I enjoyed more than DS did :-).

So, after all that - does there appear to be a correlation there? Dr. M said he had a case exactly like this last year and they finally ended us doing FESS and adenoid removal - which is what DS will get if this round of meds doesn't work. He also said he "wouldn't touch" a decompression surgery with sinuses like that, and he frequently has to refer for this reason.

Well first of all...I have to say that I am so glad that you have a GOOD Dr in all of this!! You gotta love those Drs that can make a dx just by peeking in you nose or looking in your eye for all of 5 secs. I have had many experiences like your DS did and it feels like such a waste of time!!

I think that DR. M is very wise in not wanting to go ahead with the PDF surgery if you DS is having a sinus problem. I remember right after the surgery I had a terrible time with my sinuses and I couldn't even imagine it  if I already had an infection. Not to mention you don't want him going into a surgery like this with any kind of infection or inflammation there already. So it really sounds like your Dr has his head on straight.

What have they recommended to try and control the migraines? I know several members here have had success with taking beta blockers which will stop the adrenaline response therefore taking the stress off the blood vessels trying to react. If you could get the migraines under control then you could deal with the sinus issues first and then once they are cleared up, go back and look at the PDF surgery again and assess whether it's needed.

All in all...it sounds like your DS is in good hands!!

I wish you and your DS all the best as you go through this :)
