Slurred speech?

Slurred speech?

Have any of you experienced slurred speech...with no other reasonable explanation?? I was taken to the ER via ambulance..from work last week because my right arm was tingly..i was weak (which i think was due to panic more than anything) and i slurred my speech a little bit. They did a cat scan and ekg..and blood work. All looked "normal" ..for some odd reason my toungue has been extremely weird feeling almost like i drank burning hot coffee and burned ALL my tongue. Sometimes it gets soo dry i can bearly talk..which can explain the slurring. Please help!!

Hi!
I can't really offer much advice, as I dont understand why the slurring either, but I can tell you, you are not alone!!
My symptoms started showing up last January and I was dx'd in March. I am a receptionist and some days when i answer the phone I slur. Not really bad, but its there. I cant describe how it feels... it is like its "hard to talk". Like I really have to try hard to speak.   That symptom started showing up right at the same time that all of my chiari symptoms were getting bad enough to drive me to a neuro. So I dont think its a coincidence!

well...its good (but not good ..if you know what i mean) to know that i'm not alone. I've known my diagnosis for years already and I know what I need to do..just cant do it just yet..BUT the symptoms have been increasing. This new one just came about more noticable last friday. I've experienced it before but never really paid much attention. Its just as you decribe.."hard to talk". Just plain weird.. Does your tongue seem dry??? If the slurring isnt weird enough my tongue..not my whole mouth..is super dry at times its hard to talk. They say it could be that i'm diabetic..but my numbers as all other are "fine"

My tongue feels funny most days, but I have a "Geographic Tongue" and Fissures on my tongue so its really crazy looking. I assume my dryness/burning/swollen feeling in my tonue is from those problems!
You say you have known your diagnosis for years and know what you need to do.. just cant yet.... does this mean that you have not had surgery?
I was dx'd in March 2010 and havent had surgery and am trying to put it off... forever.. if possible! lol  I like meeting others who are living with it and havent had surgery like me... cuz its easier to relate!

Hi! I'm sorry I haven't been on here long enough to reply. I haven't had surgery. I've had symptoms since I was 19 but with the years they have gotten worse so it seems. It is definately easier to relate. This tongue thing is weird....I went into a panic last night driving back home cause i had a hard time swallowing..not a nice feeling.

I had the slurred speech, but I had the opposite problem. I felt like my mouth was over producing saliva..and that was slurring my speech

I also have the slurred speech, but like thieb9 I have excessive saliva. it tends to happen in the evenings for me. Its an almost daily occurrence. I try not to talk when I feel that way. I also experience cognitive issues when this happens too. I don't realize it at the time, but if I answer an email then reread it the following morning it will be jumbled up like a child typed it..... I try and do all my buisness early in the day before my brain turns to mush and the symptoms flare. It would be nice to have an explaination from a Dr. but everytime I have mentioned it to one they look at me like I'm exaggeratig.

Doctors seem not to care about certain things..you almost have to be hyperventilating or passed out for them to be concerned..hopefully we get answers!

If u get this twice-sorry! I noticed u also have the geographic tongue. A couple years ago my dentist suggested a mouthwash that helps with appearance and burning sensation and it's wonderful! It's called Prevention and I used to could get at walgreens but now have to order online. If u do make sure you get the green label one. (alcohol free) I use after I brush each time and it's been a life saver. It's a pain to have to order by case but wouldn't go a day without it now! Have had family with same tongue issues that swear by it now too.

My husband started with pain in his jaw that evolved to slurred speech and discomfort when swallowing. He had an MRI of his brain, a CT of his sinuses, tons of bloodwork and all they found was his liver levels were 416 from taking vytorin. They are now looking into ALS and MS. I am very frightened. We have an appt. in CC Phila. with a facility well known for diagnosing ALS. Does anyone have comforting advice or a similar experience?

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

Try to calm down and wait to see what the dx is..many conditions have similar symptoms so they test for many and rule them out one by one...so just bcuz they r testing for MS and ALS does not mean that is what they will find,.

Ask for copies of all MRI's and the reports just in case u decide u want a 2nd opinion, it helps speed things along if u have all the info ahead of time.

I pray all goes well and do post an update after his next Dr visit!!

I have been experiencing some speech issues, more like a small stutter and some slight slurring i think. Though I feel I am speaking clearly... i think the problem is now that its hard to access info or words in my brain - I am not sure what it is, but perhaps the anxiety of not being able to find words or thoughts makes me stutter a bit?

This part ***** a lot too! Especially at work.
