Funny you should mention that, a few years ago I was working and picked up my briefcase and turned and had a rib dislocate back where it connects to the spine. It was the most painful thing I have ever felt. The chiropractor put it back in place and it was one of those moments where you just say OMG! Alot of things make sense now since this diagnosis. No one had ever heard of that before when it happened to me. Thanks for the info.
I get frequent pain like this you describe, and the doctors would say I couldnt have anything wrong in there due to the strength of the t-spine and the wouldnt consider my syrinx as the cause of my pain, even though that is the only thing in the area of the pain, that could cause pain. I do have degeneration of the disk at T 8-9 so the cant say it cant happen.
I did a lot of research in this area and found that people with forms of spondylosis can get inflammation in the small joints where your ribs attach to your thoracic vertebrata. Your ribs have a certain amount of articulation and movement where they attach back there, and if a rib slips at all it can pinch all sorts of nerves, hurt when you lay or breath even. I think those with connective tissue are at higher risk for this as well, if your connecting tissues are stretchy, how are your ribs going to stay in alignment? This is just one of my theory's of my t-spine pains. Sometimes I get a pinched nerve feeling there and others it is a burning stabbing pain so i think I have two different things in there taking turns on hurting.
A herniated disc is very unlikely. The thoracic spine is rigid, not much movement at all. I have a herniated disc at T12-L1, and the neurosurgeon I saw said it's a "One in a million" spot to herniate. My little sis herniated the same spot. Dr says it's a genetic weakness.
well there is referred pain...u can sometimes get pain in other areas of where the issue is....if the disk is pressing against a nerve for ur arms u will feel it in ur arm not ur lower back.
This makes this all the more fun to figure out...I have a nerve chart somewhere...i will dig it up 2morrow and post a link....

I have a bulging disc and a herniated disc in my lumbar spine but the thoracic spine was the only part of my back that wasnt a mess. My neck and my low back both are a mess on my last MRI. I dont understand this pain where it is? This just stinks. There always seems to be something new with all this.
I did find some foaming bath oil at Walmart for aches and pains that smells kind of mediciney but it is awesome. Seems to really help with some of the pain to soak in that.
I have had similar pains as well, and I do not have a syrinx either...I do have tethered cord....and EDS.....and a bulging disk, so I am never sure as to what is the main cause of the pains I am having....I also get muscle spasms that on a scale of 1 -10 is a 50...
I hope u find the root of ur pain and can get relief...try a warm soak...that is what helps me : )
