Throat feels very swollen but its not?

Hi my name is Erica and I'm a Chiarian since 2010 and my symptoms are getting even worse! Its like somebody really tuff hauled off and punched me right in middle of my neck! Makes it hard to eat, drink, and breath at times. I saw a specialist for EN&T and he said that my Chiari has to be fixed first bc that be why  my throat is always soar and red with blisters like strep but always negative test results. Any help I would greatly appreciate! I go to neurosurgeon the 29 the and scared but determined to get my life back!

Hi...many of us  are prone to related conditions some are connective tissue disorders while others are autoimmune conditions . One such condition is HASHIMOTO'S THYROIDITIS and can cause all sorts of throat issues....and would not should on a throat swab for  strep.

It may also not show if only TSH is checked during blood labs....one needs TSH, Free T3 and Free T4 and TPO antibodies...and an ultra sound of the thyroid can be very helpful too.

This is just one thing to rule out....but I am also wondering when your last MRI was as it is possible to have changes in how your Chiari is affecting you and your overall health.

I am actually having these symptoms (without the blisters), but I had the decompression surgery on April 2nd.  I think it is the swelling & inflammation causing it for me.  I do find crushed ice, popsicles, & ice packs to neck for 15-20 minutes help with discomfort.   Does it make you feel like your glands near your throat are swollen??  It does for me. Hopefully this resolves in time, but don't expect full relief immediately after surgery.  Everyone is different so you may have some relief post op, but I wouldn't expect it right away!!  Good luck with you NS appointment.
