Thyroid

Does anyone know if the chiari has an effect on your thyroid?  I thought I heard that it could. I have a mainly underactive thyroid but it am not being medicated for it.

HI Mia....chiari can affect us in that we r prone to autoimmune disorders and one, that I have is Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.....so yeah, it is not a big stretch to say chiari can affect ur thyroid.

The tests to determine Hashi's is different from normal thyroid testing.Normal tests look at TSH...for hashimoto's  u need to have TSH along with Free T3 and Free T 4 and TPO antibodies.

It took a long time to get meds, and I had to have my PCP do it as with chiari, ENDO's do not look at Hashi's  correctly and treat it like a normal thyroid issue...so even tho I had nodules on my thyroid my Endo refuse d to medicate bcuz my TSH was "normal".....it can be quite frustrating...but the weight gian was enuff for my PCP to read the info oI found here on the Thyroid forum....the group there is really informative.
