What questions?

Was wondering if there was a list of questions to ask drs. I am seeing my 1st neurosurgeon tomorrow and have the basics but since I am still walking in uncharted waters was looking for any advice.

Thank you!

Sorry I am so late to reply.....we do have a list of questions to ask the NS I will copy and paste below....but I want you to keep in mind....having a list doesn't always help since we can not be prepared for all possible things the Dr might tell us.....

But you should take a written list and have someone with you to ask questions if you become like a deer in headlights with what ever the Dr may share with you.
Good luck.

-If surgery is suggested, asked which type they do, and why.....ie- endoscopy, bony decompression, or PFD w/duraplasty and what kind of patch is used.

-after surgery, how often will you be seen by the dr for follow up visits, MRI's ect..

-is everyone in the OR covered by your insurance, ask for their names and contact( check this with your insurance comp)

-if you traveled to your NS, how long after you are released from the hospital, does he need you to stay in the area.

-when scheduling surgery, ask about local "houses" that you and your family can stay at lower rates.
ie- WI- Kathy's House- see our links page for more info.
TCI in NY has Variety House- see links page for more info

-will the Dr check you for related conditions like tethered cord, syringomyelia(syrinx) or Ehlers-Danlos (rejection issues)

-what % of benefits does the Dr feel you should get from having surgery

-if you are not a surgical candidate at this time, ask what treatment options are available, Pain Management, meds, ect...and how often you will be monitored, via a visit or MRI.

-ask if the NS can refer you to a good Neurologist in your area that understands chiari.

- does your Dr offer an e-mail addy for patients to contact for questions they think of once back home?

Well I am no expert by any means but I have seen my share of docs. I am almost 8 weeks post op and I remember the fear I had when hearing the name of this condition that seemingly no one could figure out. It's a confusing time in your life and it can be overwhelming also. I would make sure you talk with them about ordering you a ciine flow and an MRI of your whole spine. And you need to seek out a chiari specialist that treats this and all its related conditions.

Selma will give you wonderful advise and guidance and I'm sure will respond soon. Good luck at your appt.
