I have been recently diaganosed w/ Chiari- In my report it states "There is a downward herniation of cerebellarAcute cerebellar ataxia tonsils that are 2.6 cm below foramen magnum and are somewhat pointed" does this require surgury?
Depends on if you have symptoms, and how debilitating those symptoms are. Generally, unless you have syringomyelia also, if your symptoms are mild, they will just want to watch it. I just had the surgery, but I had syringomyelia also, and was beginning to lose feeling in my right side. I had no symptoms from the Chiari itself. I would discuss it with a NL or NS, and have then do a full back MRI to rule out syringo- that is if they haven't already. They are supposed to if they find Chiari, but most dr's don't know enough about it to do this.
