after surgery ****

so my hubby had his surgery on the 8th of october and has been sick ever since. Lots of nausea and daily headaches. Which he had neither before. They have checked him for everything and says he is ok. However they see a pocket of fluid that they say can be normal after surgery. They say the only thing left to do is go in and get rid of that fluid.  Kenny says he feels a lot of pressure in his head.

He didnt suffer like most of you before the surgery. He just had a few  symptoms and they caught it pretty early. No syrinx tethered cord or anything like that. NOw he is in severe pain everyday and has lost 35 lbs.

anyone heard of this? any suggestions? they said there isnt a leak

Turned out he had a small csf leak for the last 7 weeks... They fixed it and he is a new man!!!! No more headaches or nausea!!!!

They are opening my hubby up tomorrow to go in and remove the pocket and check for any other issues. I am sooo nervous.

Hi everyone! It's me! Sorry I haven't been on I've had it rough since surgery. I just want to say I have this issue u r asking about majerus. Sane exact situation too I went for preventative surgery and am having some mild complications. I was re-admitted a week after surgery because of brain swelling. Now the swelling is gone after steroids but after a Ct scan yesterday they still say I have fluid around the area of surgery and it could take weeks to months for my body to re-absorb it. Essentially it will take time and they don't know how long. Let me know if u have any questions best wishes!

Hi I have seen the term used b4...here is what I found:

A pseudomeningocele is an abnormal collection of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that communicates with the CSF space around the brain or spinal cord. In contrast to a meningocele, in which the fluid is surrounded and confined by dura mater, in a pseudomeningocele, the fluid has no surrounding membrane but is contained in a cavity within the soft tissues.
Pseudomeningocele may result after brain surgery, spine surgery, or brachial plexus avulsion injury.
Treatment for pseudomeningocele is conservative or may involve neurosurgical repair.

i will def look into these...this has been duch a difficult 6 weeks for our family. It is so sad to see a healthy man go in for preventative surgery and come out soooo much worse

One does not need be overweight for this condition although it is found more common in overweight individuals.

I am not sure what is going on, but something to be aware of......not sure y he has that excess fluid and if it is considered hydrocephalus or not.....

A shunt would be a permanent thing as it is surgically implanted...sometimes they r removed.

If they can remove the fluid without a shunt this is good news... whether or not it builds back up is another issue.

Since the pressure is borderline high this is something to keep an eye on.

I wish I knew more....only can suggest u look into these areas and ask questions.

the fluid is on the outside of the muscle so it isnt on the brain itself..is that still considered hydrocephalas?

well he definately isnt over wieight. He is 6ft 2 and weighed about 210 when he went into surgery and now he weighs 180. We took him off the pain meds and the nausea and vommiting has stopped. He had a spinal when he went back in the hospital about 2 weeks agi and they removed some fluid. They didnt think his pressure was too high but was borderline high. They havent said anything about needing a shunt. Is that something permanent? The surgeon just said he would go in and take care of that pocket of fluid. Will it build back up?

HI.....yes it is possible to develop the condition - hydrocephalus after having decompression surgery.Too much CSF and the body does not absorb it and it creates this problem.

Sometimes a shunt is used to drain th excess fluid to the stomach.I am not saying he has this, but is sounds like it is a possibility.

Also it is possible to have a infection ...can be from the type of patch used...

Is it the surgeon that has checked him?

Do read up on intercranial hypertension and or pusedotumor cerebri...both r names for the same condition.
