Hi, I am thinking you probably found a doctor by now since this was still in July 2010. But if you want to find a doctor specializing in Chiari and Syringomyelia, Dr. Mark Hamilton in Calgary at the Foothills Medical Center is a good doctor. he specializes on children's cases, but accepts adult patients, too. He is my doc and is very good at his job, very kind and soft spoken. He explained my condition well, and gives me all pros and cons, whether they are good to hear or not. I personally like it, then I know what exactly i am in for. My syrinx, when they first found out about it, was as long as yours or maybe longer. So take heart, it'll be okay, you just have to accept things as they are and do the best you can to enjoy life in your own way.

I have spina bifida and had a syrinx in the T5 region. I was having extreme leg pain and was resorting to crawling on my butt at home. I was working two jobs and was managing. I am in Edmonton and was a patient of the Spina Bifida Clinic at the Glenrose. They have an adult clinic for Spina Bifida and I was seen in January 2008 and had an MRI five days later, it was an urgent basis MRI ordered by the neurosurgeon. The MRI revealed the syrinx and this was complete explanation to the pain in my legs. I was told I was going paralyzed in both arms and legs without surgery. In April 2008 they inserted a shunt to drain the syrinx. I was walking before the surgery but did lose function of my legs. I have complete function of my arms. The pain before the surgery is all but gone.
