can syrinx occur anywhere in the cord?

Hi All,

Can you have a syrinx anywhere within the spinal cord? Is this why everyone reccomends getting a full spine MRI? Ds only had brain MRI to check flow.
I am reading the Chiari syrngomyelia handbook, and I think what I am understanding is that you can have a syrinx that is causing symptoms same as Chiari. YOu can have Chiari alone or Syrngomyelia alone or have them  together. So much to take in when you don't have a medical degree.
DS has only gone one day out of the past 19 without HAs and is not sleeping much at all. I am still waiting for Dr. Frim's response, but I have made an appointment with pcp, and I want to be well prepared as they are in the 5mm club, and in this book it specifically states that you can have Chiari symptoms below 5mm. I am highlighting all pertinant info and taking this into her.I just want some relief for my boy. He comes in from school just dragging, and it is heart wrenching to see him in this condition. I don't know what to give him for the HAs anymore as he is already taking the max dose of motrin for his age.School has been a big stresser for him, but we have to get through this trimester then we will start homeschool again. Sorry, ranting again,  I just want to be clear on my info before I go. As always, thanks for listening
Barb :)

I agree with the above. There are other types of cysts that can also cause problems such as Intradural cysts. It is possible for a Syrinx to extend the full length of the cord and into the brain stem

Yes you can get syrynx any were in the spian.

We frist found out about my Daugther (16) when she had MRI on her lower back.
I then asked for a Full MRI and that was when we frist found out about ACM and she has Extensive Syrynx (Multi-loculated).

As for your son take him to Hot pools or a spa.  This worked well for my daughter.

HI Barb,

Yes u can get them newhere, but they r more common in the cervical spine....but , many have them in their lumbar or thoracic area also, so it is best to have the complete spine checked.

And not to add to what ur already r trying to comprehend, but  degenerative disk disease and stinosis can also play a part in the symptoms. There r several related conditions or conditions those with chairi or syringomyelia r prone to get as well that we do have to rule them all out.

Suggest a warm soak in the tub when he gets home.......a nice way to relax after a stressful day at school......

We r here for u to rant to, so u can keep from ranting at home : )

so rant away!!!
