My NS said this to me ad ultimately this is what made me decide that I NEEDED the surgery: 'the Chiari you have will not kill you, however, with the amount of medications u r taking ur liver and ur kidney will fail by the time u r 50 (I'm 35)'
That sealed the deal for me less pain meds, less pain, fewer headaches, where do I sign?
I agree with Selma; with a Chiari malformation Dx, the bigger question becomes what are the risks of not having surgery. I didn't like those odds. But, I have an experienced NS who had operated on me previously, and I trust him.
Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.
With ne major surgery there r risks, and that is something all Drs do not take lightly so this surgery is usually not even suggested unless the benefits out weight the risk.
The question I was concerned with was what is the risk of not having this surgery....'
But, as long as u research ur NS and know u have a well experienced one, and have ruled out all related issues that may affect ur recovery .....and it is a surgery that ur Dr feels is best for ur overall health to have then it is a choice only u can make, but u have to get a lot of answers b4 u can begin to answer that.
Some issues that can occur post op is u can develop seizures, or epilepsy, ICP,(intercranial hypertension) surgery can also fail....again, u need a well experienced Chiari specialist to help u .
Make sure u know all the related issues u have sleep apnea, disk issues, tethered cord, ehlers- danlos, a syrinx....it can make a difference.
I am not sure if I answered u, I hope this helps : )
