Good luck with your appointment.I am also a patient of Dr. Henderson after my long term neurosurgeon retired.
Dr. Henderson is an American, raised in Australia, hence his accent. He is head of neurosurgery at Doctor's Hospital in Lanham, MD. My experience at my 1st appointment(also is my interviewing a new doctor), was he wanted to perform surgery 2 days later, ordered items through the nurse for me, both times not asking me, and I stopped him and said that I was the patient and no thank-you for the TENS machine and he asked why, I told him I had something better, an IF-4000 Personal Interferrential machine(your own personal STEM), which you can do a lot more with. Also, I was not ready for surgery. I wanted to stop smoking and loose some more weight first, then we would discuss it.He was fine with that. PLEASE do not feel pressured, if you are not ready or not sure, tell him, he won't get upset. I really like him and I feel that he thinks that most patients do not know anything-like most doctors, especially specialists. Over the years, doctors have learned from me as a patient(anything rare-usually I have it or had it) also, I know what works for me.
There are a lot of factors to consider before surgery. At my age the results are not that great and I have so many other spinal problems, it is too much and decided only if my life was in danger would I be decompressed. I may have no choice with some of the discs and bone spurs to be corrected. My neurologist also agrees with me . I see him 3-4 times per year and he is in Northern VA, with Inova, Dr.Stuart Stark.
Again, best wishes and if you do schedule surgery, let me know and that goes for any of you in this area, I will come visit because I live a few miles away.
Take care!
