Would you describe it like a "swooshing" sound in your ear??

This can be a symptom of Chiari, and it is usually caused by elevated intracranial pressure.

by rod44, Sep 28, 2009 04:47PM
Well….there could be…..loads of reasons…..but one in particular comes to mind…..

I have sinus problems that prevent  the air pressure in my ears from equalising, I get a rushing or gushing noise (not tinnitus) every now an then as well
Glad your up and about again Elizabeth…

I used to notice a crackling noise in my ears on occasion for a few weeks before I started having the vertigo, the tinnitus and the fullness feeling is going on for a few years, because I had the noise in my ear and the vertigo, tinnitus and fullness they assumed it was Menears Disease an inner ear illness. I have since learned that Menears is often diagnosed in people who it transpires after further investigation have in fact Chiari, it is a common misdiagnoses.

See mom I’m a good boy…sweet as pie….

I see...I wonder y we all have this issue...how chiari is affecting the ear, so that it is not detected on exam....and I have not had a good explination....u?

U r being good now bcuz Lizzy is cutting her grass.....

Well I am new to Chiari but have been looking for answers since I was DX with a Syrinx in Feb, I was originally DX with Menears Disease and had been researching that and have vague memories of seeing stuff about Chiari because some of the symptoms are similar, then when I got the DX of a syrinx I had to change the direction of my research and found the links between Chiari and Syringomyelia….I also know that CSF can leak through the ear….Chiari can affects the cranial nerves so it is plausible that ear problems can arise in people with Chiari, either way it seems to be a problem for people with the illness

Ooo yaaaa ye girls stick together…hmm…
What do you call a blond farmer ….an expert in her field lol!!

i'm so sorry i missed all the fun!!!  but i told you he was the instigator!! lol!
the only problems i had as a kid, was everytime i tried to learn how to swim, i would end up with an ear infection.  after 5 or 6 summers of this, my mother gave up and didn't enroll me again. there was an incident about 6 or 7 yrs back where i woke up in the morning and my ears felt funny.  i kind rubbed them (from the outside) and i heard this crunching noise and could feel something inside.  i gently stuck a qtip just barely inside the opening of my ear and when i took it out, it was covered in dried blood!  it was more on one side than the other, but don't remember which one it was. i went straight to my pa who confirmed what i had seen as blood and then she sent me directly to the ent.  he looked in my ears, said he saw nothing and sent me packing.  i went straight back to my pa, she took a qtip and swabed my ear and it came out with dried blood on it.  she pronounced the ent "nuts" and gave me ear drops because she didn't know what else to do.  it cleared up within 7-10 days.  about 2 weeks after that all started, i had my first, and worse to date, bout of vertigo!  so, maybe there is a connection?

by selmaS, Sep 28, 2009 08:08PM
kooky stuff this chiari.....I never had the dried blood....but times when my ears hurt..from wind or times when it felt like someone jabbed an ice pick into my ear

by n40066, Sep 28, 2009 08:10PM
wonder if there really is a connection or if it is just a coincidence...

by selmaS, Sep 28, 2009 08:15PM
too many chiarians have th eproblem for it to be coincidence

by shanmomof3, Sep 28, 2009 08:19PM
I have noticed the more severe the pain the more "stopped up" my ears feel.......I don;t know either. Thats what;s hard is trying to figure out whar is a symptom of the chiari or if it is another problem altogether

by n40066, Sep 28, 2009 08:25PM
unfortunately, this is a question we may never know the answer to.  so, we suffer and wonder.....

Chalk up another chiarian with ear pressure & ear aches (like all day Saturday & most of today). When I was 'in the tube' during my MRI the pain & pressure in my ears and the back of my head was so intense I thought my ears were bleeding. Didn't understand it then (that MRI showed the Chiari), so I thought that maybe the noise was just getting to me & it was all in my head (sorry, no pun intended). I have read some case histories where others have experienced the same ear issues.

I had my PCP check my ears this morning because I wanted to make sure I didn't have a legit ear infection thingy going on...and I don't.  When I hurt enough for my husband to notice, he'll tease me about my brains leaking out of my ears...lol.  We actually use it as code in public when he wants to know if I need/want to go home & rest (or cry).
