Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

How long the herniation is, is not the more important issue when it comes to this condition but if it is causing a CSF obstruction and how it affects ur overall health.

Granted some with very long herniations are very much affected by it while others with very longs ones have no idea it is even there....and then u can have someone with a minute herniation of 3mm's and they are suffering greatly.....

In addition to having the herniation there are other related and some non related conditions some also contend with, so not all their issues/symptoms are from Chiari alone.

It is very difficult to compare one persons experience with Chiari to that of another as they can be so drastically different even if they have the same NS treating them.

My comment is a serious statement. There is pharmaceutical alternative called merinol that did wonders for me in and out the hospital
Seems to me it depends on how far sunk your cerebellum was before the surgery. I was 25 mm and I can't seem to find to many others that far sunk in my research. Maybe my situation was a bit out the norm for chiari. Wonder what the average millimeters sunk per patient. Would be nice to know

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

I only had nausea while still in ICU the first two days......and I later found it was the pain med they were using I was having a reaction to....once that was changed I was better .....so do look to ur pain meds and discuss with ur Dr as u may be having a reaction or side effect.

Keep us updated on ur progress : )

I took 12 drugs until I broke down and took a small puff of medical marijuana. It was the most eye opening situation ever. I immediately felt like life was manageable. Before I vertigo so bad my whole building was flipping in 360 flips. I wasn't smoking it eating edibles after my surgery cause of the seriousness of the situation. Side story is my father flew in to take care of me from the east coast. He is pharmaceutical industry exec and against marijuana as a medicine (until now). I left my medical marijuana books out as to be a smart *** and also knowing he would browse them as well. He later said it actually made a ton of sense but he doubted it medical use. Took me 28 days to make it out the hospital but when I got home I was miserable. The whole house was flipping and I was throwing up blood and having horrible attacks and pain. My father turned around and said "it's either back to the hospital or your wacky weed". I considered it and went into my bathroom and since I had no power to light it my roommate helped me. One puff and 15 mins later I could eat, life felt manageable again. I wasn't miserable. I was watching return of the jedi with my father and could hold it together. It was a miricle in my opinion. No meds could accomplish this at all. I was prescribed over 12 and only that helped me get it back together.
Not preaching but just it was such an eye opening situation and such a relief that I still can't believe it but now I know why it's so special. Had to leave my two cents so hope no one minds

I fought some after my surgery, and Zofran did the trick for me.  Since then I have been fighting random waves of nausea that accompany the dizziness.  A word of warning, if you feel the nausea, don't let it get so bad that you start throwing up.  The motions and muscles used in the process put a massive strain on the back of the head and neck which right after surgery is not comfortable by any means.  A couple times I actually took medicine to knock myself out to make sure this wouldn't happen because the pain was so bad when it did.  Hope this helps!

Hi I have been taking zofran and cyclizine for a week now but still the same... I was told by the surgeon that I would be feeling sick for 7 to 10 days but hopefully will end soon just really checking with other members if this is true or will it last longer... the good news is all of my previous symptoms seam to have been fixed after my surgery...

My surgeon told me I Would wake up with a horrible headache and nausea.  He said that the area of the brain where the incision is made is located near the nausea center.  I was given a bottle of Zofran for the nausea.  I did have some brain spasms but no headache or nausea.  Ask your doctor for something to help with the nausea, you certainly don't need to have to deal with it while your brain is healing.
