need to get back on med schedule

now that i am home i have been taking pain meds as needed, not really on a schedule. i think that's hurting me, not helping me. these are the pain meds i've been prescribed:

oxycodone, valium, tylenol (650mg) and ibuprofen (200mg). at the hospital the tylenol and ibuprofen were scheduled meds and i was only given oxycodone and valium when i requested them.

any ideas on when i should take each?

need to take tylenol every 6 hours. should i take oxy with tylenol, or valium with tylenol? or with ibuprofen (every 4 hours).

i dont want to take more than i need to.

It is important to keep these med's in your syptem ecspecially right after surger.  Sound's like you have the schedule down.  Good luck.

my nurse gave me a list of meds to take with the intervals, every 4 or every 6 hours. so this is what i'm doing now:

every 6 hours-- 9am, 3pm, 9am, 3am: 650 mg acetaminaphen
every 4 hours-- 12pm, 4pm, 8pm, 12am: 200 mg ibuprofen

at the hospital i was not having a lot of pain so i barely took any oxycodone or valium. maybe that is why they weren't scheduled meds.

i plan on taking oxycodone and valium before i go to bed and maybe when i get up. i seem to be in most pain in the mornings.

I would think ur Drs would have given u a better idea as to how to take these meds, and I was sent home on a schedule with them and slowly shifted to the OTC meds....

I would deff be taking the  stronger meds b4 bed to help u sleep and in the AM first thing....depending on what time u get up u may want to take tylenol 4 hrs after u took the other meds...and see how that works

It would also depend on what u have planned for the day....if u plan to go out somewhere...take the stronger meds and time them......

The worst thing is to end up in pain and then the meds do not help....u have to stay on top of it...but u also do not want to over do it...my DH kept a chart....wrote down the times and what I took....this way we could see just what I had in me and if I forgot did I take something I could look.....and then u can use this to decide when to replace the stronger meds with the OTC meds....

Some of these meds r ones u do not want to take too much or rely too much on if u do not have to, but if u do, use them.
