newly diagnosed 11 year old

Good afternoon.  I just received a call from our pediatrician.  He described what showed up on the MRI as a downward displacement of the cerebeller tonsills.  Also said Chiari malformation of 2mm.  The neurosurgeon that also looked at MRI said not life threatening or anything but he definetly wanted to see her.  Cant get in for one month.  I thought I would ask some general questions to those who have experienced it.  She also has been diagnosed with a mood disorder in the past   She is very hard to parent and live with, to be honest.  She only started having symptoms of headache and nausea so I don't thing the mood disorder is caused by pain.  Anyone else have a mood disorder?  Also, she was diagnosed with some optical problems.  Not poor vision but more brain related processing problems, some times her peripheral vision decreases on one side. Dr said when she gets stressed or worked up it may decrease then.   She had to do alot of reflex work in therapy.  Anyone familiar with this? Thanks so much.

No worries....here is a list of Drs in your area that members here have been to, treated by and liked....the list is not a referral nor an endorsement for those listed...it is meant to be used as a tool to get your started on researching Drs.....not all of us will find a Dr close to home and do have to travel to get to the right Dr and having the right Dr is key!

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum,

Mood issues can be related to Chiari....since we have it since birth, it's congenital we may not be aware of ALL the symptoms affecting us, since we are use to feeling that way and may consider it to be "normal"...it is only once the symptoms grow in intensity that we may take notice...

Chiari symptoms also cycle and flare so certain symptoms may not stay with us for long periods and be mistaken for being related to what we were doing or a cold or flu....we do not see it as a separate issue or symptom.

Vision issues are typical for us with Chiari....and  when we are stressed this is a call to the brain to send more blood to an area and bcuz  the areas are limited due to it being smaller the rush can cause symptoms to surface....

Has you daughter had a CINE MRI? Been reviewed for related conditions?

You will want to get copies of ALL testing including copies of her MRI's , and reports ,lab reports for blood work....this will help you get another opinion from a true Chiari specialist....many have found other Drs even NS's do not know how to measure a Chiari herniation correctly, and or to look for other related conditions that may be affecting her.

May I ask what area you live in?
