hi beckyrudy, ive had the chiari surgery four years ago and ive had sleep issues since. my biggest issue is the pain, then what i call freezing up when i go into a deep sleep the pain is soooo intense when i go into a deep sleep more than when i get my couple hours. i was diagnosed with no rem which is dreaming. but when i do rem thats when the freezing happens. i also had abnormal eeg when sleepin. hope you feel better
thanks guys good to know im not alone there, i know just what you mean selma, i was like that yesterday at work.
and yes i do think it is related only because the worse my migrians and other problems get...so does sleeping. although it could just be from the stress. who knows, im not really sold on the whole sleeping pills idea. dont they make you drowsy all day? plus i pretty much against taking any pills aside from my migrain pills. ive been trying herbal teas and cutting cafine all week, but here i am again pulling another all nighter, cant sleep. ive been looking up more on just plain insomnia ill let you guys no if anything works for me.
also ive read that a major cause in death for chiarians is sleep apnea, even more than surgery. is that true and should i be worried since im already having sleep problems?
Hi..yes, this is very typical for chiarians...and for me was my biggest issue...I would lie awake all night....and when it was time to get up for work is when I was finally able to sleep...this continues now that I no longer work...so, I tend to stay in bed if needed....
But ne sleep I do get never refreshes.....

This has been my worst symptom (besides the headaches) for the past month. Falling asleep is easy...it's the staying asleep that I just cannot seem to do.....3-4 hours is my max, then I'm wide awake. I never had issues this frequent before the headaches started...only once in a "blue moon". I am not sure if you can absolutely pin it all on Chiari; however, I do know from reading several articles that sleep issues are sometimes related to Chiari. For me, I think it's absolutely on my symptom list. Sleep aides (carefully monitored by my MD) have helped, but I only take them occasionally as a last resort. Hope you can get some rest....(and me, too!)
Insomnia isn't uncommon, whether you have Chiari or not, so I wouldn't jump to conclusions. But I have heard of a correlation between sleep issues and Chiari, usually having to do with not getting quality sleep because of either sleep apnea or lack of deep sleep (something with REM, I forget what it was exactly).
Are you tired but unable to sleep? Is there anything keeping you up such as pain, racing thoughts / stress, etc? How long have you had this sleep pattern?
Headaches from oversleeping is normal, I think, but if you have a condition that causes headaches like Chiari that could make it a ton worse!
