Just curious about people who smoke and had surgery. Did you quit before your surgery and how soon beforehand did you stop smoking.

I stopped as soon as I was told that I was going to need surgery. It's been almost two months now. I get tempted every now and again but there is a looooonng, curved, road ahead of me so I know better than to revisit that vice. I figured that with all the risks pertaining to surgery I should eliminate the ones I could. Good luck to you!

I used to smoke many years ago, way before I had health issues but I do remember that nicotine can affect your circulation and nerve function to a degree. So if you can quit, it's best to do so. However, I understand too that it's really hard..it took me 3 times and three children to quit!

Good luck!

I just started bak up again.  Bad bad me....... I am hoping the three days post op will push me into stopping again.  But I have a hard time right now stress is worse than the smoking side effects.

Hello there- I had 3 level diskectomy on July 8th and I quit smoking about a week before surgery and started again a month post opt. I have healed really well and I'm not a heavy smoker about 3-6 smokes a day. Depending on the day!!! I am having chiari surgery on Nov. 4th I am planning to try to quit about 2 weeks before but I just get so scared that smoking is the only thing to relax me. I know it's wrong I just enjoy it. I'm not sure if that helped. My dr told me that if smoking is what helps me relax and if I only smoke a few a day there are worse things I could be doing. Not that he wants me to smoke, but he understands the pain.
