5 year old child development

My son is five years old and is playing hockey. He seems to be the only child on the ice that doesnt really grasp why he is there. He will skate around somewhat oblivious to what is going on around him. I asked him if he knew why he was playing hockey and whether he knew what hockey was. He didnt really know. Further to this. I asked him if he knew why he was going to kindergarten every day. He didnt know the answer to that either. I wonderif there is a certain age that children suddenly understand why they are doing things rather than just doing what there parents make them do, and whether this is typical for his age.
He likes skating and going to kindergarten, but it concerns me that he doesnt really understand why he is there. I see the other kids grasping what they are doing, understanding it and having fun with it and want to know if I could be doing more to assist him with this.

I don't think there is anything you can really do or say as he is only five. I rememeber back to when i was a kid (now mid 20's) and couldn't play sport due a childhood hip disease and my mum enrolled me in keyboard classes, i never knew why i did it, i just did because that's what 'mum told me to do' . The same with school, i didn't know why i had to do it at that age, all except that my two older sisters went too. Give him time to adapt to the world around him.

I work with children of all ages, and realise that some kids just know exactly what, when, how and why they have to do it, and some are just blissfully unaware and just do because that's what happening at that time and other people are doing it too.

Give him time, he will eventually piece together and make connections with the world around him. :)
