10 year old at school

my son is 10 and is on depakote and strattera and has just started to act out at school after a real battle last year befor the doctors found the problem. my question is with him he is very social and loves to talk and act up.  we have had a good year at school until the last month. i do not feel that a time out room is what he need, but i'm not sure what to do. he is very smart but he has trouble with keeping up with homework and telling the truth. we have a teacher that helps by pulling him from class each day to help with homework, but he says he hate that he is treated so different. i do think that sometimes a spanking helps a little with him but not for long. he has bipolor and adhd. what can i do as a parent to help the school with him and stop the problem in class? the school systems do not know how to deal with the bipolor,they do not understand that he wants to the best at everything.he has a big heart but as you well know with the bipolor he tries to make himself look really important at everything and can not keep friends.i want him to behave at school and where ever we are but i also want him to know that i do not always agree with the way things are handled. what i mean is that i'm not always on the adults side that he is important also.this is a disorder that you never know what is going to happen.

It's very important to have a solid alliance with the school. Establish an incentive system with the school, whereby your son is 'rated' two or three times each day in regards to his adherence to classroom rules. For each rating period when he succeeds, he earns some reward (TV time, video game time, 'treat', e.g.). For any period he does not conform to the rules, he will not earn his reward and he should also have some period of time out (e.g., 10-15 minutes).
